I just had a look at Scifi-meshes.com.
If anyone who is reading this is familiar with that site, then you'll have noticed that the site has been down for a few days. Well there's some really bad news - the site may be gone (In it's current form) permanently.
The server crashed and there is a distinct possibility that EVERYTHING is gone.
Aceman is attempting to recover what he can, but the worst-case scenario is that he will have to rebuild the site FROM SCRATCH. This would also mean that people will have to reregister to the site.
For those of you that are reading this and are unfamiliar with it, Scifi-meshes is - was - exactly as the name implies. It was all about Scifi art, graphics, and models.
There were literally thousands of models, images, and movie clips...and it was all made by fans. It isn't a professional site, but was an outlet for people like us to create their own masterpieces and show them to the world. It was full of Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica...you name it, and someone had made it there.
The loss of this website is a great tragedy for scifi art in general.
Fingers crossed that at least some of it can be saved...

I discovered this yesterday as well . I was slightly consoled by the resurrection of AFC, but I agree that the loss of scifi-meshes would be tragic. I've got my fingers crossed that Aceman can recover the data.

Yes, I admit there were professionals on there, but for the most part they are fans with ideas and a bit of skill - and in some cases a LOT of skill.
I just hope that CrimsonLine's NX 1701 Enterprise Hybrid isn't gonna be adversely affected by this, coz that was turning into an amazing model...

From reding the site it would appear it was primarily a hard disk failure. Even if there was a problem with the internal components i'd just like to reassur everyone that it 99% of cases some if not all data can be recovered by IT pros. Just hope it gets back up and running soon though. It was a fantastic site and a huge number of people had put so much effort into it

I've got Supremacy stored on a source control server (with complete revision history), and the local copies on my desktop and mobile workstations are almost always up to date. It's highly unlikely that I could end up losing more than one day's work .

Oh man. You just have to have back-ups these days. I´m currently in spain, but before I came out here AFC was still down, and it was only just now in this internet-cafe/bar that I discovered that it´s back online, much to my relief. I also had quite a bit of 3D art at sci-fi meshes, which before that was called sc-fi art, which was also lost in a crash. It´s a shame, but these hosts and admins must back things up! If not, that´s a lot of hard work lost. Fortunately all my meshes and images I´ve stored in 2 mirrored drives and on Dvd, so they´re safe (safer anyway) - particularly my Constitution refit - the coup de grace connie refit out there.
For 3D art fans, my latest project is a complete rebuild of the Nebula Class. Without blowing anhy trumpets it is, categorically, and literally, the most accurate and detailed Nebula class model that will exist (when it´s done). Hopefully they´ll be sci-meshes to post on when it is).

Dafedz, I'm anxious to see what you come up with . Dave Clark did a great Galaxy class model, but I haven't seen any stellar Nebula models. It's too bad, too, because it's one of my favorite ships.

Oh yeah, the Nebula and the Akira never got enough screen time.
Good luck with the model, Daf, and you know we'd be most appreciative if you posted a screenshot or three...
...
Reading what Aceman has said, the people that he pays to host the site were the ones to blame. They never made any backups themselves!
The "newest" backup that Aceman has is March 2005 - and that backup did NOT include any of the models or anything, it was more like a photo of the site rather than an actual backup.
CrimsonLine has recreated his thread, anyway.
Trust me, it's an amazing model, although some of you might think such a model is also "heathen"...

Coming from an official perspective, we'll call it a tragic and critical technical fault. There's obviously more to it than that, but at the end of the day, the site is still there, and we will rebuild it. (From my point of view it is really bad as I am an admin of SFM's sister site, Military Meshes, and we'd only had a year and a half to build that up to where it was, so now we have to start from scratch again... but thats life).

It's a bit late to say it now, but other sites went with Sci-fi meshes...!
Thanks for reminding me, Martocticvs and it's good to know my nudging you got you to come back here...
