Just poking my head in to say I'm still alive.. I've probably been turning in about 1/3 the points I used to, had problems with my main desktop and havent been able to afford to buy new RAM, until last night, so maybe this weekend i'll be sending in points again.

A ton I've missed out on! That "Supremacy" thread looks good, I'll have to read that tomorrow..

Whats the status of the team? Hopefully it's larger then when I last checked a month or so ago

Actually, quite the opposite has happened with the team.

Billy has pulled out coz folding was causing some pretty major problems with his computer.

In the last week, me, you, Trekboy, Authur, Ashur, Bogseat, Europekid, and Mortse are the only people who have apparently folded. Considering there are supposed to be 20 people in the group (Excluding Gareth coz he's now Authur ) that means our group is considerably smaller than it should be.

Still, we're gaining points, even if it is less than it was. For a while, we were averaging at just over 200 PPD, but it's picked up again in the last 2 weeks or so. We're now around 730 PPD, and that'll go up again if you start folding like you used to, Ringold.

We're currently ranked as team number 1515, so we're definitely doing well. We've gone up 4 places in the last 24 hours, and 26 places in the last 7 days.

So what exactly was the problem with your computers Ringold?

Well i'm glad to see we've all found the new thread fine. The other one was just getting a bit cluttered lol. Only occational updates from now on, highlighting points gained or places.

I was sort of wondering why we had dropped our points quite a bit but atleast now we're doing around 750ppd. Hopefully if we can sort your prob out Ringold then we'll be back to our brilliant best.

If anyone has any ideas for attracting some more members then that'd be great

Sorry if this is a little off topic but i'd really apreciate a solution to my problem.

As many of you guys know i'm a bit of a hardware freak, so i took the liberty of buying a few old cpu's off ebayUK, which are between 486 and PentiumMMX standards. I can't really do much about the 486 but i'd love to be able to test the rest of them. After a long trawl through MOBOT last night i found an old ABIT motherboard that supports all AMD and Intel CPU's from that era. Unfortunately none seem to be avalible.

It's the ABIT IT5A (you read correctly). If anyone on here has one or knows someone that would be willing to part with it that'd be fantastic. I'd happily pay money for the price of the board + postage costs.

PS: Can anyone clarify if the above motherboard supposrts 50FSB CPU's as said by MOBOT. However this seems to conflict with the manual

sorry if i haven't been putting out wu's as often as i used to. but i stoped overclocking my computer be cause i can't afford to fry it then get a new or fix it. but i'm still folding as much as possible though.

People can see it listed as one of the folding groups.

Of course, only existing fans of BOTF will know what it means, but i've put in a link to these forums on our team page, so people might visit that way.

I also know for a fact that there are other teams of Trek fans out there, coz there's one called Wolf359 - Who other than Trek fans or possibly Astronomers would come up with a team name like that?!

And the sooner we can get into the top 1000, the far greater numbers of people will look us up on the EOC and F@H sites, plus maybe google us if they're intrigued

Well this is the first meaningful update! We got an teriffic 1436 points yesterday . Thanks to not so many teams picking up points that's taken us up to Position 1478. However, we'll need to fold a load of points now, as the teams infornt of us are well ahead. Keep up the excellent work! Let's not let it drop

Optical drives, like DVD-ROM's & DVD-RW's, unfortunately, dont live forever

For me, they've been the most frequently failing items. Hard drives, second. They're just about the only mechanically moving parts in a computer, and heavy use burns through their lifespan. That might be it, that's what I'd bet on.

Thankfully, DVD-ROM's are pretty cheap compared to a few years ago, $15-30 USD. I'd recommend taking the side off of your case and taking a look inside, it's usually the left side panel that'll give you the proper view inside, and look to see where the DVD-Rom is, what cables its connect to and where they lead. That way, if they want to beat you up on installation, you can buy it and do it yourself. There's just one tool required, and that's a screw driver.

Other then that, the only maintenace item I could think of would be to make sure the cables are connected in to the back of the DVD-ROM securely (I had a problem where the IDE, the wide ribbon looking one, was only about 3/4 the way in, and it'd power up but wouldnt read anything) attached, but it shouldnt be a problem if you havent done anything.. violent to your computer. Additionally, a shot out of a can of compressed air in to the inside of the open tray wouldn't hurt, given its non-functioning status.

If you do open up your case, take that same can of compressed air and blow off all the dust that I know must be in every nook and cranny as well

I got raped on my last can btw, 7.99, but I needed it immediately and couldn't afford the time to shop around. Damn university tech store >.<

Otherwise though, another option is to just like the DVD-ROM sit idle.. as long as the other drive works fast enough to play DVD's on the fly and whatnot. Save the money spent on a redundant optical drive towards a future new computer from the ground up.

Too bad you don't live around here in Florida, I wouldn't mind dropping by and showing you my tricks of the hardware enthusiast trade

yep the good old advantages of being able to build ya own pc, saved me tons of money from me building my last 4 pc's from parts it went 486, amd k6-2 500, athlon xp1800+ and then now to athelon 64 3000+

raiden, you don't happen to have any of those old cpu's around do you? Just interested to see if you would be interested in getting rid of them to an amateur collector?

most my old stuff goes virtually free to my older brother, hes quite happy to have 4 year old computers. he just got my old athlon xp 1800+ system for £30, still going strong after 4 years of use.

Is it just my computer, or is folding at home running really slowly? I've had a work unit worth 149 points now for about 5 days now and it's still only about half done! Usually I'd have finished it in 4 days at the most!

I'm asking coz i've noticed our 24/ hour average score is really low now.

Yeah, i've noticed that it's slowed down - and our average point score has more than halved during the last week.
