i would figure out where it was located ( the URL) and then did the link thingy in the account menu.

*I* uploaded my own avatar to a server, and then used that URL.

Ok, Wookie, just do as Nemitor said;

1) Find an avatar you like. (The site has many avatars preloaded if you want to choose one of those instead)
2) Get the link url (Right click the image, click on properties, then copy-and-paste the link url)

If you don't know what I mean by a link url, the url for my own avatar is
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v207/ ... sports.gif

It should look something like that. You should probably check about file permissions as well, coz not everyone likes people linking to their own work. If you make your own, you can avoid problems like this.

3) Log into this site, and click on "My Account".
4) Click on "Change Info".
5) Near the bottom of the page, you'll see your current avatar (The question mark one) next to a blank text box. Paste the url link into this box. (Or click on the "Show Gallery" button if you want to choose one of those)
6) Select the checkbox to delete the current image.
6) Click save changes.

If you decide to make your own avatar, Photobucket and Imageshack are both excellent free filehosters. I personally prefer photobucket, but you have to register with them before you can upload stuff.

Just copy the links they give you once you've uploaded your file, and enter this link into the text box that I mentioned in step 5.

General Avatar rules
Although the site has rules on the sizes of avatars, these are not strictly enforced. I myself am breaking these rules, as are about 90% of the other people on the site who have custom avatars!

However, please try to keep your avatar as small as possible. The max width (In pixels) should be no more than 150. This avoids messing up the post sizes in the threads. My own avatar is exactly 150 pixels wide, so if your avatar is bigger than mine, resize it!

Try to keep the space size as small as possible as well. Remember, everytime a page is loaded, you have to download the avatar. This can really slow down the speed that a page loads up, especially for those on Dial-up.

If you are using an animated .gif as an avatar, then optimise it. This can save quite a lot of memory. (And therefore load time) You won't encounter this probem with a static image.

While we're on the subject, how do other people use images as signatures? I'd like to do that too!

Signature images are easy enough to do, Stumpy.

1) Log into the site.
2) Click on "My Account".
3) Click on "Change Info".
4) In the box where you enter your signature, enter the url of the picture that you want.
5) Add in image tags around the url.

The image tags look like [img]and[/img]. You put the [img]tag%20in%20front%20of%20the%20url,%20and%20the[/img] tag after it - without spaces.

So enter [img]The%20pictures%20url[/img] to get the picture to show up in your signature.
6) Click "Save Changes".

If anyone decides to use one, then pleeease try to be sensible and don't make them too big. As with avatars, image signatures can mess up post formatting in a thread, and remember that not everyone has a high-resolution monitor. Large images could take up their whole screen! 8O

Just checked ur avatar link and you cant use websites (link with .html at end) for avatars you need to have a link with .jpg on the end or some picture format.

Hehe I think people are gonna get confused, now, cdrwolfe!

...

Wookie, it's like Skeeter said. You have to select an actual picture - you can't have an entire webpage as an avatar!

...

General, mine and Skeeters avatars are the realistic maximum size for avatars. That's 150 pixels wide, and 184 pixels tall.

What's the rusty spoon about though? :?

...

Everyone else, please be sensible with images to avoid the wrath of Jig. He's serious about this.

avatar? mines a sig - my avatar is 80x80.

I have a reason, but it isnt very good.

and I'll shrink my signature if needed, or remove it.

My bad, it was a typo.

I meant to say that the max size of avatars is 150x187. Your sig. image is fine as it is, General. There's no need to resize it coz it isn't affecting the post boundaries.

Of course, if it was, then you'd have to resize it.
