I am new but i wish to know something. How will Bof react with Vista and it's DX 10? I read that once you use it you will be unable to play any game that use's DX 9 and below? So if this is true, how will games we play now be of use if we use it? Will Bof 2 be usuing DX 10 or will it be 9? And of course the reverse.

And if 10 will let us play the old games this question is moot. But if not, what will happen?

Hey there, Poke, welcome to the site!

Many people have the exact same fears as you do.

To my knowledge, we simply don't know how BOTF is going to react to Vista, because let's face it; BOTF is an old game. Vista will be two generations ahead of BOTF in terms of programming.

That doesn't mean it won't work though. There is a possibility that it will, or someone will eventually find some sort of fix that allows it to work. I'm not a programming sort of guy, so maybe it just isn't possible.

There's always hope though. One thing's for sure, Vista might be flashy, but i'm holding onto my XP computer until I know BOTF will work. :P

...

This thread is more suited to the forums on the BOTF part of armadafleetcommand, but seeing as the forums are pretty much dead at the moment (:() I don't see any problem with talking about this here.

Again, welcome to the site, poke! :D

Early in Developement, Microsoft claimed that Vista would have roughly equal compatibility with older programs as XP SP2 does. That was back when Vista was still Longhorn though, so that may have changed since then, but now that Virtual PC is free, even if BOTF won't run in Vista, you'll probably be able to use a virtual machine to run it, hopefull VPC 2007 (which will also be free) will add the ability to use hardware acceleration for 3d graphics, which it currently can't do.

Also, the thing about DX10 and not being able to run DX9 games, load of crap. Although DX10 is essentially a reworking of the DirectX API from the ground up, completely forgoing backwards compatibility, Vista will include DirectX 9.0c for all the games not written in the future.

I can't speak for Gavin's game, but Star Trek: Supremacy (my BOTF2 project) is based heavily on Windows Vista technologies. It will, however, still run on Windows XP SP2. It uses the Windows Presentation Foundation, which will take advantage of whatever DX9 and DX10 features your video card has.

Due to my typing i fogot to add the 2 on Bof. (stupid me) I was asking about Bof2 not Bof. But my questions are answered. I will wait for vista and see what it will do. But untill then i will stay with XP. Well, untill Falcon-NW supports it and the games will work good on them.

Thanks guys

I read in GameInformer that of all the games tested, most of them worked providing they were fully patched.

I read on Gamespot that some games have had trouble with Vista, although most work fine. Those that don't work either have graphical errors or load up the start movie then crash to desktop.

The problems seem mostly related to drivers. Nvidia needs more time to get their drivers running properly with Vista - when the games were tested with an Nvidia graphics card, there were numerous crashes. ATI seem to have the problem cracked though, so most of the tests were run with an ATI card.

If people want a look, Gamespot have a list of the games they have tested and the results. 12 out of the 35 games tested were unable to run on Vista.

The Test

Make sure you click the link under F.E.A.R. and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic's playtest results - the game test results are spread over three pages.

Sorry for the double-post, but here's another bit of Vista news.

32-bit versions of Vista will NOT be able to use HD or Blu-ray content; Microsoft have pulled the plug on this feature because there are too many ways that people can compromise a 32-bit system and gain access to protected data.

64-bit versions of Vista WILL have this functionality because the programming is more secure...but there's fewer devices that have gone through quality assurance tests etc. and many may simply be incompatible with Vista because of the drivers...

Yet Another Let-down

Yet another reason to not bother with any of the nextgen disc formats, at least as far as films go, data back-up is another issue. Not that any power on Earth was about to make me buy a new monitor (with a HDCP encrypt chip), a new graphics card (with said chip) and a new drive just to have HD on my computer.
