btw. testing, either that particuliarly nice tracking feature where somebody is browsing atm is flawed or a lot (and I mean a lot, I just toyed a bit around and played big brother for a while ;)) of folks in here try to post in the closed game request section (it's nearly half the clicks I get when randomly checking).
strange behaviour, but well this could also be some stubborn guy trying to go through the wall every night and day :) anyway I also noticed a lot of people are reading through the boe english translation thread, I hope they check it's already done..

secondly when I'm writing posts, the insertion of let's say "intelligent" tags, meaning for example when I want to select a part and make it bold, those bold tags from the writer's menu above appear at the end of the post instead at the beginning and the end of the marked text. Maybe that's something worth to check after.

I think you're simply being brought to whichever forums people happen to be reading or posting at, and not just posting at.

A lot of people still read that locked aspect of the forums, mainly since it advertises in huge letters "this is what has been decided for the game."

However, considering that part of the forum is now outdated by over a year, there's really little purpose for it as decisions for each game are being made inside their respective forums. Perhaps it is time to find a better use for that part of the forums and maybe clean it up a bit (or atleast archive it away from the main forums).

Personally, I'd like to see the information in the Game Request forum archived, and then re-arranged to provide a place for shared resources that can be used by any BotF2 projetcs, such as models, concepts, design decisions, etc. Game-specific things can still be handled inside their respective forums.

never thought I'd ever say that, but totally agreed! *jokin*
I'd say we wait till all major projects here have some sort of playable alpha/beta of their games out and then rearrange all forums accordingly putting the old stuff down there at the end where it belongs in my opinion.

I agree as well - the forums desperately need tidying and sorting out - the only problem is who should do it and what needs to be kept and what needs to be archived? What information is STILL relevant to the various games? What should the new forums be called?

I also think a new interface or something would help to spruce up the forums. Let's be honest, its pretty generic and only vaguely LCARS. Some of you might remember that *someone* found a Big Brother site that used the SAME interface as this one!

Do we really want to continue to use an interface that Big Brother viewers are happy to use? 8O

I think this is a topic that warrants serious discussion - and would definitely require its own thread - maybe even a new news item, poll, or mass email as well.

...

Malvoisin, I don't understand the problem you're experiencing. The tags are working just as well as they always have been for me... :?

wanna know what I'd do ? simply erase all topics strongly related to gavin's work and the rest moves - marked as archived - down to the bottom end, period.

simple and clean and hopefully not much work to do so. I mean it's nice to have so many posts in here but if 3/4 of it are more than 1 and a half years old, that's not so funny anymore, don't you think? If I were an un-prejudiced-first-time visitor here, I'd think those guys here do retrospecting and love old things or something like that.. ah, you know what I mean don't ya ? ;)

edit: really? the tags only work on the other afc site, not here..strange

and btw. is the other site not hosted on the same domain ? I mean why not just copy their styles (I mean the botf-mod-armadafleetcommand) and stuff? Those site certainly looks better and I really like the last 10 posts in the news don't you too?

Your statement is interesting there Moe. When I suggested it you about came unglueded with the thought of losing all your old posts. But I stated just about the same thing.

1.) Take all important information and archive it.
2.) Use a group to look at all the posts then as a group tag which ones needs deleted and which ones needs archived.
3.) Perhaps a setup like this.
a.) Archives
a1.) Important threads for game development
a2.) Threads / Ideas for future games or modifications
a3.) Historic markers of game development and testing.

Even if older posts are deleted no one should lose the ranks they achieved or are still reaching.

This is just an idea for a format.

I'd volunteer my services towards this - I think the majority of things that are past the first couple of forum pages are going to be out of date. Everything in Game Request is archived and that's most of the game info.

Dafedz has his own archive at Trekmania with the database.

@Winterhawk: True, and I can agree with that as a system.

@MOE: I never knew that about BB! We probably will need a whole topic to decide what is revlevant as what isn't. I can imagine that'll cause a few arguments!

Most of all, no matter what anyone thinks, I'm all for saving anything to do with Gavin's project. If only as a testament to his work towards the game. What would we do if he returned and wondered where all the old threads were.

One more thing, how big would it be (just as a query) to archive the whole thing. How big in terms of data size is it?

lol don't take me too serious on my remarks about gavin. I mean I don't know that guy, I just see that he left rather not like an english gentleman, to put it that way. If you have good memories about the time back then and wanna share all this with the visitors, okay, it's definitely none of my business anyway :)

No I didn't take your comments the wrong way at all! To be honest, I don't really like the way he left but I'm sure he had his reasons. Just my own opinion on the issue.

Chris

anyone knows if this guy is still alive (somewhere maybe)? hehe sounds weird I admit but that kind of **** happens in life if you know what I mean, maybe it wasn't his fault at all ;)

okay, I'll stop that talk ;) but it certainly sounds suspicious that he left one day to the other without anything leaving behind..I mean he obviously hasn't watched the series final of ds9 all too closely had he?! :)

I dont mind helping out.

I see the real problem being dealing with pics, diagrams, ect. We all know those take a lot of storage space themselves.

the real question is where can this information be stored unitl the achives are built? Is one person going to hold all this information?

Also would we need to hold whole threads or just the pertant information?

Perhaps I am thinking too much on this.

[EDIT]
This just hit me.

Would this also include information that are on the individual segments?
You know in bht BOTE, Alliegence, Supermacy sections?
Or would these also have a special archive?

Most of the images have off-site locations anyway - and when the site's archived I'd assume it would be viewable in code to see what address it is.

As to your Q Winter, personally I'd divide the archive up (like the forums are at the moment) and just store them all in one large one.

Well I vote that about 93 % of my early posts can be deleted. I know what I wrote and would not miss a single one!

For starters, deleting ANYTHING is foolish. Any single post on this forum could potentially hold something interesting or important. That's why it needs to be archived, not deleted. Simply move it into a designated archive.

Secondly, there are currently four projects here. Now, each project will have different needs that are often specialized. But on the same note, each project has needs that they all share with each other such as graphics, sounds, music, etc.

So, I think the forums should reflect that. The forum setup should keep the four BotE, Supremacy, Allegience, and NB. I think NB could use a little rearranging as it currently contains a lot of information that could instead be shared with other projects. For the most part, Supremacy, Allegience, and BotE are ok as-is.

I think a fifth forum should be setup that deals with Community Resources. This is where things that could benefit multiple projects would be kept. This would include the pictures, sounds, music, and other things that could be used by any project. Currently, a lot of these shared resources are in the General forums and in the NB forums. They need to be moved into a more appropriate place. This will help make this information centralized and in one spot which is easier for the people looking to contribute and for the people looking to use those contributions.

General should be reserved for, well, general conversation.

I'm not really sure what to make of the Game Request forums. They might still be obsolete since each game at this point is taking a different path. A suggestion for Supremacy might not work for NB or Allegience, for example. As far as I can see, Supremacy, BotE, and Allegience are all open to game suggestions (not a lot is known about NB at the moment). So perhaps simply renaming that forum to "Game Design Archive" or something would be sufficient.

I dunno, I'm just rambling at this point. But I think restructuring the forums in a way similiar to what I've described will help organize it and reduce some of the confusion that exists, particularly with new members.

Speaking as a former new member, the first time I saw all the different forums, I didn't really know where to start looking. So perhaps rearranging the forum view (this might require new software) to break down the forums into different tiers might be worth looking into.

interesting, azhdeen's copying my unwritten views out of my mind very often recently :)

interesting enough, there's actually another site besides us and that big brother one mentioned above that uses this style, see here: http://www.tct.clanservers.com/STOFleet ... ame=Forums

that leaves me again with the idea of a major face-lift (though I like retro of course like I said several times somewhere else already). Didn't Kinneas from HF do such thing with the STGU, jig? maybe he feels like helpin us here a little too..
