I'm staying put at 12th for the moment - but we've got less than 12 active! Seriously If i knew what all my problems were to do with I'd be folding as much as possible - still getting in a few hours each day though.

Congrats on 300,000 points :D

What I don't get is, yep they use the way protein's fold for medical research but how exactly would they implement that for cures? Surely everyone's protein's are unique, just as genes and DNA are unique.

Chris.. I might be able to help with this one..

I worked as a temp at a RNA business. So learned a little bit..

The protein's can be added to RNA (a division of DNA) then those are joined to strong DNA and from that comes the reverseal or cure.. However I have a gal next door who could answer this as she has a degree in this field.. I'll ask her...

[EDIT] 1663 left to catch Zahadoom ..... on third 5000 WU...

I'd guess knowing what proteins are responsible, what's wrong about them and how they get that way is half the battle. It was only some time in the last month the definitive answer as to what protein is to blame in alzheimers was absolutely confirmed (but long suspected).

Economics is my field, though, so... I fold, Stanford publishes tons of research papers, I nod, smile, and fold on. :)

Okay.. they can create a generic version of RNA with the protien in it.. then that is set in a generic DNA sample.. that can in turn be made into vaccines
and other medicines..

IT is more complex then I figured it to be..

It looks like we've got back to averaging around 1000ppd as a team!

Chris, I notice you're still turning in bum WU's, 5-7 a day it looks like. I guess no luck figuring out whats wrong?

At least it isn't in the hundreds as it was, Ringold. I had noticed that the points and WU weren't matching up, but I assumed it was someone *else* since we weren't returning the hundreds that we were.

If we could sort out these units, we'll be able to return more points for the team.

Yeah, I almost didnt notice except I noticed he was occasionally getting a few points and the only way to get single-digit points awarded is for a WU that is returned as an error.

Those are nice WU's.. Nice catch. :)

You're going to be in the top 10 in a couple days too I think. Most of the top 10 aren't producing any more though, so just a matter of time till you pass them up!

Wonder how long till we hit 50 pages of posts..

I was able to get a 546pt WU last night too; those things are nice.

My points-per-day for an average WU, like this 186pt WU I've got on the other client right now, is around 150; for this 546 pointer, my ppd is 315.

300ppd total with normal WU's, or around 600 if I was able to get a steady stream of big WUs..

of course.. we can't get them like that.. but they sure are a treat when we do get them. :)

When I used to fold for HardOCP.com, they instilled me with.. certain degree of Folding@Home fanaticism.. I check all 4 clients I've got running about every 30min to see what WU they have, how much progress they've made, if they're happy or if they're having any problems, if they've failed a WU recently, and if it looks like they're getting shoved aside by some errant program eating CPU time..

Then I check the official F@H forums for news. Then I check again.

Then I rock back and forth, count to a hundred, and then check again.

8)

They've given me an idea over there, though; they constantly run different competitions to encourage higher production, and right now they're giving away a full X2 4200+ computer system (or it is a 3800+? I'd have to look) in a random drawing after team members enter. Raffle tickets are earned based on how much production increases. I was thinking of doing something similar with a copy of a game like Crysis here but not sure if we could drum up enough people to make it nicely competitive. I'm gonna keep it in mind, though; maybe it'll stir some people to life.

But okay, talked enough, gotta go check clients again. One of them might've burped.

A little news from Stanford that I hadn't noticed from Feb 18th..

Quote:
With the GPU and PS3 ports looking more and more mature, we have put more efforts into Win SMP and v6 and I am happy to say that we are begining to testing both with outside alpha testers. It's still early, but we see the light at the end of the tunnel on both now that they're in outside alpha testing.

With the release of v6, we have also planned some adjustments to the point system. It's clear that points are important to everyone. Points are important to the science, as they encourage people to do the science. However, this means that the points scheme has to be aligned such that donors who optimize their points optimize the science of what we need too.

We have a plan on how to improve the current scheme and will announce it as v6 rolls out. V6 has some new features which allow us to make changes to the points scheme that were not possible before, which hopefully will let us optimize the points for science, thus allowing us to do our scientific calculations with even greater efficiency.

I'm generally not a fan of announcements without something more concrete (eg a download for the new beta clients would be nice), but I wanted to let people know what was coming, especially considering concerns that donors have had with the current system. We've read the threads -- thanks for the feedback and suggestions. The new system likely won't make *everyone* happy, but I bet it will resolve the issues raised and it will also be better for the science. More details to follow.

Windows SMP! w00t!

Sounds like the actual beta will be somewhere in the time frame of "weeks" rather than "months", but if its "months" it wont be many. Soon, in other words. Good news for anyone with dual-core or dual-cpu but an Nvidia-flavor video card or an ATi/AMD one not of the most recent models. No more darn hassle with dual command-line, 1995-style clients to get maximum work done.

After taking 10th it wont be too long at all till you get 9th, too. After that.. only a matter of time until you settle in 5th or so; just have to step over the bodies in the highway till then! Unless one of them like Author_Wonderbird stirs back to F@H life, but dont know how like that is at this point. Evilhawk is on the rise

Arthur is still waiting for his laptop to be fixed - it's in PC World at the moment, but it could be anything up to a week or more before he gets it back. :(

He was getting a BLACK screen of death - as in the lights were off AND the people had moved house. :(

Once it's fixed, he's going to wait at least a week before installing folding again - he has a suspicion that his problems are (At least in part) down to folding@home. :(

Laptops are hit or miss, I'll begrudgingly admit. :( Some are better able to take the heat than others.. compact ones rather than 'desktop replacement' models are especially that way.

To be honest, a Compaq laptop of mine had an HD give out after 13 months (and of course the warranty was 1 year) and I suspect it was at least half from the extra heat. Looking back, I think that even more now after a Google study earlier this month that found most HD's aren't affected by heat but those that are die fast and young (like mine did).

That, plus two desktops that fold well plus a third on the way, plus the loud fan noise the laptop makes, = I don't fold on it any more. If my output was lower, and I cared more, I'd use the command line client to limit its CPU usage to 70% or so to limit the heat output.. but I don't care to go to that much trouble for an extra 80ppd for running 24-7. If Arthur wanted to, he could try the same, but lots of hassle for very little points.

Good luck Arthur. :\ Dont worry if you can't fold -- I'll fold that much harder for you. :D

As of today 25/Feb/2007 I have to get 732 more points to match 10th spot.
I'm doing yet another 5000 WU, and started it last night/yesterday. so I'm going to guess that 2 more WU's will get me at 10th.

Very exciting to me. Never thought I would get this far this fast.

so Most lap-tops are really not good for folding huh? Good to know as the wife wants a laptop and wants to fold also. So we may (once were both working and have the bills caught up) get her a lap-top then anohter base computer with duo-core so she can fold.

but that will be a long while.

Well, by Friday, my product will approach 1k/day.. Hm, not that I've got anybody to catch up to.

I'd ask for ideas for recruitment, like starting a new thread, but really I guess our community is fairly small and more or less tapped out in that regard. :\ Just about everybody in the forum already has some points on the board, from Wonderbirds 392 to Azrael's 9413. Even the strobel bone, at 1818.

Hmm.. well, Fold on, guys! Fold on!

Im Back! Started folding today. My laptops been returned and it's working now. So far I haven't had any faults.....

Also all my files were intact so I haven't had to re-install all the files too so thats a bonus.

....

Also I hate laptops! lol I would also choose to have a pc to a laptop but coz i'm in uni and my accomodation gets smaller each year and I move alot, it was impraticle for me to keep my old pc. But as soon as I move into a decent house i'm back to the desktop pc!

Fair warning: I've noticed Notepad that comes stock with Vista DOES NOT accurately decode F@H client's config files. Open them with another application.. Word handles it fine, OpenOffice seems slightly confused but does the job properly. Notepad in XP seemed to do a good job, but x64 Notepad mangles it slightly.
