Every class you take is worth a "number of credits". Each grade you recieve is worth a number of points. In short:

A = 4
B = 3
C = 2
D = 1
F = 0

Also, there are things such as A- and B+ and such which appear in between those values. For example, an A- would be worth about 3.67 and a B+ would be worth about 3.33.

Most classes are worth 3 credits. Some are worth 4 (Math classes usually and some science) and some are worth less (labs tend to be 1 or 2 credits).

So, if I take Leetmath100 and it is worth four credits and I get a "B" in the class, all four of those credits are worth 3 points.

If I take Lamescience623 and get a "C" in that class (which is worth 3 credits), then all three of those credits are worth 2 points.

Once you get all of the grades for your classes, the average is taken to determine your GPA (Grade Point Average). This is NOT an average of all of your classes, but rather an average of all of your credits.

So, of my two classes, I get 4 "3's" and 3 "2's" for 7 credits total. So... ((4 * 3) + (3 * 2)) / 7 = (3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 2 + 2) / 7 = 18 / 7 = 2.57 GPA.

Clear as mud?

Not to brag or anything... but I graduated my two-year school with a GPA around 3.5. I graduated with my BS in the neighborhood of 3.3. My first semester of college ever? 0.97. :p
