Sorry marky, you misunderstand.
The new ship replaces the old one in the build queue only. All existing ships stay exactly as they are, but you can't build more of them. Your backlog of excelsiors would still be present to fight the dominion, but you'd be building newer ships.
Regarding mods, this game will just be a collection of mods, every race is a mod etc etc.

the whole point of the game is so it will be moddable, saying we rely to heavily on mods is ridiculous.
look there can only be so many ships ok, so we need a workable list of ships, were some will upgrade and replace older obselete classes. others will fall by the wayside, as better versions will become available. why build excelsiors when you can build galaxys? why build mirandas when you can use intrepids? once a ship becomes obselete the ones in your fleet will still be out in space doing there thing, as you build newer versions you would then swap them and decommission the old ships.

id never deccommission my older ships
i love excelsiors and mirandas and theyre still heavily used over 100 years after the first ships were commissioned
i was just liooking at the footage from "call to arms"
and theres maybe 2 DOZEN mirandas and a DOZEN excelsiors
plus THREE defiants which is very cool as the defiant is rarely seen
check it out
if i could post it i would

ya but you forget they were pulled from scrapyards all over the place because the feds were running out of ships, after the borg and the first major battles with the dominion the feds had no option but to use old outdated ships.

and that was 1 of the PROBLEMS with BOTF
u could not really build a diverse fleet and build a fleet like on ds9
and if im younger than U does that mean i should replace U puff?
lol
i mean, i like the fatc that u can still keep the older ships, but i think u should till be able to build at least sum of the older ships even wen the new ones come online
and io mean, u can bet that during the war starfleet built more ships of older designs
cuz they were PROVEN
if sumthings old u dont just throw it away

Does this mean, Jigalypuff that there are a limited number of ship slots?

Something else, you'll not decommision your ships that easily, because of the low return of resources. That is why they still had these ships, but when destroyed they didn't rebuild that old type of ships, no they created a Akira or a Sovereign, or something else.

Exactly, you'd probably get p*ss all for scrapping a constitution in the TNG era. So if you have one that's lasted that long and you still deem it useful for certain tasks, there's no reason it couldn't be patrolling a low threat border, or inner-empire escort etc.
Anyway, you'd have bucketloads of Excelsiors by Sovereign era, and you'd only be able to start to decommission them if your borders were fairly safe etc.

i understand that, but the list would get enormous big and nobody in his mind would build a NX01 when he can build a Akira or something like that, i mean in the StarTrek galaxy. I'm sure there are some weirdos here that would build a few NX01's even if you can develop Sovereigns or Prometheus class vessels.

Marky, just to clarify something mate. The highest registry seen on an excelsior is 4**** new ships like the intrepid are beginning with 74-8*. In the trek universe, ships have a production run, many models are built over time, then the run stops in favour of newer ships. Even though an excelsior can be upgraded, it's basic spaceframe is obsolete. It makes more sense from a resource point of view to build an akira or something. It's completely superior.
Because you will have built hundreds of excelsiors they will still be useful.
Let's put it another way.... When this game is finished, we'll go online and you can build excelsiors and mirandas while I build Negh'Vars, up for that mate?

OKey i was thinking about the nx's is this how they work?
NX01 = Enterprise
NX02 = Columbia
NX03 = ..
They would be the same model? But only so called because they would be easier to identify? Because i was a bit confused when they called the Columbia the NX02 when they just saw there kids in the NX01. In this episode where they have to go to the council.

i agree with that
tho i think the Columbia is an uprated version of the Enterprise after all the Ents been thru so starfleet no doubt redesigned the Columbia to be more powerful more maneuverabloe etc
maybe the Columbia is a variant of the NX class

the NX-02 is a totaly different ship hence the nx.
it looks more along the lines of a centaur class with the nacelles below the saucer section, but more behind it than forward. similer to the model i showed you.

What about the episode, in where they have to go into a nebula, to reach the xindi council? I mean they saw the NX01 with there kids, but thougth it was the NX02 Columbia. So what's that all about?

that may havee been earths first ebncounter with temporal stuff
so if it was a temporal thingy, it just didnt occur to them, so they just thoug that it was NX2 Columbia
and they might have been hoping that it was the columbia so they could see a friendly face

the ship they saw was the nx-01 they thought it was the nx-02 from the warp signature but when they saw it realized it was in fact there one ship which had been thrown into the past.

hmm
well anyway, as i said i reccomend that we use the Xhosa type ship (antares class) asd the federation freighters, and the MEDITERRANEAn class ships as the supply ships for the tng era
the xhosa type should also be for the TOS era as well
as for the klingons, they should use theur standard military freighters, which are very similar in design to the cardies freighters, but much bigger, as we saw en the rotarran escorted a convoy to Donatu 5
same with the cardies, they should usem the freighters like dukats iold freighter as freighters and supply ships, perhaps for all eras
as for the rest ill have to look into it
any thoguhts?

on the topic of freighters:
I was looking at the Karemma (thinking about eventually making a playable mod once mods are needed), and we could use their trade ship as the dominion's supply ship (as they were a "member" of the Dominion).
Two pics of the ship are here ( http://pages.ivillage.com/omniq/ )

Supply vessels must look different then the freigthers, because they have different function.
