Ooo, a torrent site, you naughty kid you.
As for the show itself..
It's a step up from Enterprise, but they're still making a blind grab at what seems to work elsewhere, hoping that it'll work for them too, just like they grabbed the prequel idea from SW.
Multiracial crew that'll likely have the token black guy, token asian, token European of some sort, token Canadian, and a couple token non-humanoid races.. oh, and an obligatory Vulcan. Just to add spice and bring it up to fully modern liberal tastes, lets make the Vulcan gay.
With the crew taken care of, they look at ships. Okay, we've done big command cruiser style ships (ENT-B-E), done pocket-dreadnoughts (Defiant/Sao Paulo), and heavy frigate-type ships (Voy).. So lets forget that Starfleet always, if it does nothing else, engineers fantastic starships, and give them a garbage heap scout-ship, and plunk it in the middle of a war where it's out-gunned ten to one!
Oh yeah, plot! Well, now we've got a war. Nevermind if it's post-DS9 that 1/3 to 3/5 of the Federation fleet has been destroyed, along with most of its best command talent and it's key member planets are still basically smoldering from beneath the rubble like Trill, we need a good war. It worked for BSG, so we need to make the whole show an arc; lets start off with some foreplay in early seasons, some gritty BSG-style battles and climax in the middle, and then a warm fuzzy pillow-talk conclusion near the end. Whack a couple characters along the way, let the gay Vulcan hook up with a yoeman who discovers he too is gay at some point, and have the XO hang himself after finding his wife/partner cheating on him with an astoundingly well-endowed Ferengi and call it a series! Sex In the City meets Battlestar Galactica, with warp drives!
We wont even speak of how the Ferengi have a limited military, speculate as to if continuity will be respected as regards the Grand Nagus (it's still Quarks brother, isn't it?) or that Cardassia has no remaining military with the Romulan's hurt as bad/worse then Starfleet, or consider that the formula of Major Network + 'Action-Oriented' Plot = Fast Death for sci-fi series (Firefly and Fox, anybody? How about Babylon-5's aborted last attempt, which didnt pack enough action or sex and thus got rearranged and then cancelled?).
Meh.
I've always thought from the time the credits rolled on "What you leave behind" that the next series to continue forward the timeline could do very, very well by coming up with a new crew, a new ship of some respectable class (Akira, Excelsior-class Lakota upgrade, an uprated Galaxy or perhaps a brand new cruiser, a replacement for the Nebula class to bridge the gap between Akira's and Galaxy/Sovereign), and put this crew to work on the chaos that would be the Alpha Quadrant after the war came to a close. There would be massive human suffering, stretched defenses, old rivalries flaring up in the absence of a strong central power, piracy, smuggling.. all kinds of things to play on. Not just in Federation space, but the Cardassian's suffered what amounts to genocide as well. Romulan's got womped on.. and if a war was needed, well, the Breen more or less quietly got away without damage to their 'homeland', so they're out there. The field is wide open, and fans get to see their Federation in a gritty light, like BSG, and get to see it struggle to maintain its moral compass before ultimately, by the end of the series, regaining most of its former strength. It's got the extremely deep background left behind from DS9 and TNG to build upon, everything from continueing the story with Sisko (who is a god these days), to Odo (also a pseudo-god), the Cardassian side, any aftermath in the DMZ, aftermath in Romulan space, Klingon space, etc, etc, etc..
That's my .02c, though. Unchanged for what, half a decade now?
