OMG that sounds soo cool! lol The most snow i've ever seen was about 10 years ago when we had about a foot of it, and that only lasted a few days.
Uk's pretty boring for weather. Which part of canada is that anyways? I'll have to remeber to not visit this time of year for future holidays! lol

Not my fault you live so bloody far north the only thing that gives you warmth is the gulf stream
I've never seen heavy snowfall (seen light snow here twice, in Georgia once), and only driven around a little ice once in Kentucky. This -20C business of which you speak.. is for Canadians.
Then again, come summer, in its +90ºF heat and +80% humidity, I'll envy you.. but I'll get over real quick by the Fall again.

Most of the Easter Weekend I was stuck at a friend's house due to snowdrifts higher than my car. And Toyota Echos were not built for winter CaptRingold wrote: Not my fault you live so bloody far north the only thing that gives you warmth is the gulf stream You've been arguing on Dailytech too much Ringold. Why is it someone's "fault" CaptRingold wrote: Then again, come summer, in its +90ºF heat and +80% humidity, I'll envy you.. but I'll get over real quick by the Fall again.
It gets pretty warm in the summer here too. We average only about 80ºF or so with about 70% humidity, but I've seen it get as high as 95-100ºF and 80-85% humidity. Luckily I can turn in any direction, drive for a half hour, and hit a pristine beach
Gotta watch out for the damn mosquitoes though

Daily Tech, lol, I've been caught!
I do that over there just to keep on my toes. Well.. that, and guilty pleasure at seeing some people squirm when their ideas get a little challenged. Small interweb, didn't think I'd get noticed by someone at both sites. I've actually used several discussions over there in my economics courses.. easy points.
I didn't know it got quite that hot up there though! That's chaotic; frigid winters, sweltering summers.. and mosquitos to boot. I'd of figured being buried under mountains of snow would kill the mosquitos during the winter, where ever it is they hide, but guess not. But I have heard about the nice scenery..
Another year and half and I'll be moving to just south of Indianapolis, Indiana, so I'll be in some of the same weather as you. Like I said, never really dealt with any of that first hand, and I call it freezing at 50ºF, so, I'm in for some fun I think.
---------
Edit:
Our team is slowly inching forward; the closer we get to 1000, the slower it gets. It looks like it might take a few months to get the last 100 or so spots up.. but I'm hoping a better SMP client gets released in the next week or so. It boosts my points hugely *when it works*, so it'd get us up there faster. That'll be a nice psychological milestone..
Our active member count has crept downward:
http://kakaostats.com/ts.php?t=46574
But our daily points has edged up:
http://kakaostats.com/tp.php?t=46574
That's been possible because I've been getting fed a steady stream of 574-point WU's my computers can chew through.. No idea if that'll last or not, but again, hope to get a better SMP client soon.

Well I'm working all that I can. Was wondering if it might be advisable to say drop a few of the low pointers as they are not really helping us anyway. Just get them off the Team list.

I haven't folded in ages. I should really start again. But now I'm definitely waiting for the new ATI Radeon HD 2900 cards to ship. I'll be moving out west to Alberta and will actually start making money, so I should be able to pick up 2 of these monster cards with more than twice the processing power as the GeForce 8800GTX. I'll still wait for the benchmarks to say for sure which card actually performs better, but it seems like AMD/ATI will take this by storm.

I think they'll probably be better thanks to being late to market by 5 or 6 months, but I'm waiting for benchmarks too. I'm not a fanboy for either; I had ATI for years and heard Nvidia fanboys say how much better their almighty drivers were, and now I get an 8800GTS and they give me the worst drivers I've used in years, at least for expensive hardware. I expect crap from scanner drivers, but not video cards!
As a extra plus for ATI's new hardware though.. there's a chance folding might work out of the box. That'd be some really good news if it did, and it'd probably dish out even more points than the current cards already do.
Good luck with the move to Alberta, though. Is that the one that looks like North Texas, or is it Manitoba I'm thinking of? Or was the similarity mostly a figment of my Canadian History professor's imagination?
Winterhawk: They can't really be removed; they'll stay there, permanently I think. I can't find my name under HardOCP's team any more, even though I gave them a little south of 100k points, but that might have something to do with the fact that the name has been idle there for a couple years now. The stats site I've been using though has an option to filter inactive names, though, and I usually use it. Every little bit helps though

I would hope it dishes out more points than their current cards, considering my X1900 has 48 processing threads and that monster has 320!!! Actually you got it right. It's the only province without a federal debt, and it's because of all that black gold. I'm looking forward to a fairly similar-to-here cost of living, lower gas prices, and pretty low taxes compared to the rest of Canada. Hopefully the 59 hour drive out there goes well though...that's pretty much the only thing I'm dreading.

Cost of living is mostly what'll be driving me to Indiana, but.. that 1000 mile trek, including a stop for dinner, a follow up stop for the consequences, and a whole lot of caffeinated beverages takes 18 hours. There'd need to be some of Islam's 72 virgins waiting for me to drive 59 hours... Hopefully that was a typo and you meant 29 Even still.. Good luck with it, drive careful in that Echo.
Aurthor, having any luck with that PS3? Just curious, I hadn't noticed any points being reported that would look like it after you mentioned it.
A timely PSA from your friendly neighborhood folding tsar/nazi:
Quote: How long will it take to complete the work unit (WU)? We have set PS3 WU's to take approximately 8 hours to complete. The logic behind this was to ensure that the PS3 could be run only over night and still yield a useful result. We will likely decrease this time in the future to try to make it easier for PS3 donors to only briefly run their machines, but still make useful contributions.
How long do I have to complete it? Note that Work Units "expire" after a certain amount of time. This means that after a certain amount of time, if the WU has not been returned, we assume it's not coming back and our server moves on from there. This is necessary due to the fact that future work units depend on old ones and so we need to eventually give the work to someone else to get it completed. The times to complete a WU for the PS3 is short (8 hours), so the deadline time is also correspondingly short (2 days).
What is the power consumption of the PS3 running the FAH client? Is it safe to run the PS3 24X7? We expect the PS3 to use about 200W while running Folding@Home. We have several PS3's running in our lab, running Folding@Home 24/7 and have had good results so far.

I kinda buggered up my computer in work so that hasn't been folding since Friday morning. The tech guys are going to wipe the memory and load everything up, so it'll be a nice, clean, computer, but i've lost about a weeks wirth of folding (I don't know when it'll be back which is why I say a week. They only took the computer off me yesterday)
I was reading an email when the thing just suddenly rebooted - no error message, no shutdown sequence, just off and restart. When it booted up it wouldn't accept ANYONE'S login - not even the administrators! 8O
It seems the startup has been somehow damaged because it is not loading up any info from the servers - it's not even realising that it is supposed to look for them in the first place.
Fingers crossed they can't fix it and get me a new computer though. That thing is ancient.

WOW! i've just been given a unit worth 755.00 points! Largest ive ever had! and its only gonna take about 48 hours to do!
however it kind of makes up for the 390 points i lost last week when a 20000 unit failed on me 3 hours before it was due to finish!
Ringgold: Dont know about my mates ps3. it should have done something by now as its been over a week. Dont know when i'll see him next either so cant check up on it! must have not clicked 'ok' or somehting when i entered all the details! lol

Well i'm working on a 250 WU right now. Boy these things get any slower, i may have to take a long nap! sheeesh!
And you all with the high tech gagets. lol I feel for ya. I'm just sticking with my old out of the box Sony XP. Yea I may not fold 3 billion WU's a day, but I enjoy chugging along at the pace it has! lol

@ Ringold: you know this program inside and out. The last unit I folded isnt sending back. Heres the latest coment in my log.
[17:45:17] + Attempting to send results
[17:45:19] Error: Got status code 503 from server
[17:45:19] + Could not connect to Work Server (results)
[17:45:19] (171.65.103.106:8080)
[17:45:19] - Error: Could not transmit unit 05 (completed April 17) to work server
Wondered if you knew what this was?! I havent changed any settings recently. So I can only assume its temporary.

I think it's only temporary, Stumpy. The server is reading as ok, so it *should* have been sent by the time you read this. Just type in the server address that you posted, ie:
Quote: [17:45:19] (171.65.103.106:8080)
Delete the timestamp and the port 8080 bit at the end so you get 171.65.103.106.
If you enter the address into your browser, you *should* be taken to a white screen that simply says "ok". If it says anything else...well, read what it says.
Servers fail all the time. It's just a matter of waiting til they fix them. The server that I seem to often have problems with is 171.64.65.58.
...
I've got some good news. The tech guys in work actually pulled their finger out and my computer is up and running again - but it's unfortunately still the old one.
They are coming tomorrow morning to set it back up in the room and install the printer for me, so I'll borg it as soon as they leave the room.
I'm currently doing p2606 and there are only 3 frames left. Computer started less than half an hour ago so I don't know what it is averaging per frame, but at least I know i'll get some points tonight.
p2606 is worth 292 points. I'm just not getting the big ones I used to anymore.

MoE has it covered. They've been having server issues lately.. they've got all kinds of projects going on, both public and private ones, so they'll happen on occasion. I usually ignore it unless it persists much longer than overnight.
MoE: Every borg counts. At my last job, I more or less had it down how to run F@H off a USB stick, but had to use low-point timeless WU 'cause I didnt have total access to the machine long enough to get them done on time. :\
Borg on.

I completed my unit.
I checked the log file and it DID have trouble sending though - it took 9 attempts before it got through. The server in question this time was 171.65.103.160 - I almost thought it was the same one as Stumpy's until I read it more carefully.
I'm now folding p3038, a 5000 frame WU worth 186 points. 882 frames done and averaging 29s/frame at the moment, so it should be done in 1 day 8 hours and 42 minutes.
Where are big WU's?!
Oh well, we're doing science, even if it means little reward for doing so.

My unit still hasnt been sent. Its been 24 hours now.
Log file is still trying to send and failing and giving the same message. Tried that thing MOE said and it said 'OK' too.
Must be one of those 'lost' units that go missing maybee.

Edit: I checked the F@H forums, and this is a known problem. Admins are hoping for an improvement within 24 hours.
Sometimes it helps my console clients to have the service stopped and restarted. I don't know if they're coded to have a lower priority once they're told to back-off and try again later compared to a first attempt or what, it occasionally it helps. YMMV

From the F@H site:
Quote: Here's an update. We have been working on servers the last few days. The reset due to the power outtage caused problems with 2 servers, which didn't want to come back up after they were shut down.
We've gotten one of the big ones back up (171.65.103.162), but we're still working on another (171.65.103.68). The latter one is giving some strange results and so we don't have an ETA on it.
Finally, we've found a problem with the collection server and it's now running again, although there may be some problems with the CS taking WU's from 171.65.103.68. We are looking into that

Bizarre. My computer managed to send one unit back last night. Still have 2 more on my computer waiting to send back! Wish they wuld fix this server! Its starting to bug me now.
....
Edit: Probs all sorted now.
.....
Ringold! Where did you go!? We need you back! We're not producing anything without you!
Tried folding off my usb stick but it didnt seem to work very well. I completed a unit but it would send it back, then when I rebooted the log said there was a problem with the unit. not bothered folding since on the USB as it slows the unit on my computer slightly.

As a form of mild protest over Stanford putting out a buggy-as-crap SMP client, and 'cause I was bored, I switched back to BOINC projects; after I'd stopped my global rank fell from 8590 to 10800ish.. I've scraped back 10417, and I'd like to set a new personal record before switching back to F@H.
But I'll switch back within a few days of a decent release of the SMP client.
It's also not all entirely my fault; I know for a fact at least a couple people on the forums can match (or exceed!) my output, they just dont fold much.
But I'll definitely switch back; by virtue of the SMP client, I'd then have higher output, too. Don't know what that means for the overall stats, though, as I wont be the only one using it. I'd think they should have a new, less-buggy release ready to go soon.. but then again, I'd of thought they'd have nvidia GPU folding by now, too. I'm an economist, guess I don't know much of programming.
Consider this a chance to catch up to me?

Stumpy and Raven seems to have easily replaced half my production (and both are set to move up in the ranks), but Raven seems to of had a short burst of activity and then stopped again. On a weekly basis, Raven I think outproduces me; just a few days like a couple days ago, and Raven would be advancing up the ranks. Two weeks of solid production and he'd slash-and-burn his way to 3rd (sorry Moe!), and a few more weeks would put him in 2nd. From there, 8 weeks after taking 2nd he'd dethrone me as the master of the BOTF folding universe, but... I wouldn't go quietly in to the night.

ya, I play WoW on the weekends, and I sometimes forget to turn the clients back on after I finish that. Trying to get people folding again by example though. Running both GPU and CPU full blast, I can usually complete 2 or 3 WUs every 24 hours (1 on the CPU and 1 or 2 on the GPU).
Come on people. If everyone on the team was folding we'd be a force to be reckoned with

I'm doing the best I can. Already fold 24/7 so theres not much more I can do now. Might pay a visit to my mate who has a ps3 in a few weeks and see whats happening.
Oh I tried folding on a usb stick but it didnt work as i kept getting problems with the units.

I'm still folding as much as I can. I've got my computer in work folding as well, although I'll be moving departments in a week or two and I WON'T have my own computer to fold on then.

Stumpy, your bud's PS3 is doing something, because you've been getting a ton of points. Encourage him to keep them coming
I was doing two console clients off a USB stick when I worked at a little shipping place and they had a ridiculously overpowered computer for photoshop; just couldn't have it install itself as a service, and had to start them from links (or a command line) with the -local flag, just like with two clients on a dual-core or SMP machine. Of course, don't even have to do that if it's a single-core machine. I hadn't figured out a way to minimize it to tray without installing extra software and thereby keep it under the radar, though, so it ran in it's little DOS window.

Well, still no new clients from Stanford; not just talking about SMP ones, but even the normal console and the GUI ones you all use were supposed to be updated by now to v6.
Either they're taking their time because it's going to be really good or because it's full of bugs of going to be lousy. I think I'll try to be optimistic.
My hope is that v6 clients will cut way down on any problems you guys occasionally have and be easier to install..

I had to stop folding all together. Reason = Something with folding was making my CPU output reading 102% and thats not good from what I was told.
At first I thought it was a game I'm playing but I went so far as to take just about everything out I have and still had the same problem. I even shut F@H OFF and was still getting that high a CPU percentage. I took F@H off my system and everything fell back to where it should be around 2 to 3%. So I'm leary about putting it back on my system.
