The proken links in the forums are actually everywhere - the old shiplist thread had a pretty major one if I tried to moderate any posts past age 1! 8O

I don't know what the reason for the problem is, but it is likely down to the old problem.

Basically, from what Nem has told me, the forums were created about 4/5 years ago using some programming language that isn't all that great. It's confusing, contains lots of useless info, and wasn't maintained properly for about three years.

Then we started having the spam attacks, so Nem tinkered round with the forums, and found that the latest security updates weren't fully compatible with the site! 8O

He had to rewrite some of the code or something, and try to combine it with another programming code so that the updates would work. This however means that two programming codes are fighting for control on the forums - and that's apparently a bad thing.

So you might be wondering why Nem doesn't just convert the entire forums into the new code? Well the reason for that is backups - if Nem was to convert the forums, we would lose pretty much EVERY post ever made! 8O

The backups made by the site would be in the old code - which isn't compatible with the new code.

So you can see, big problem. Nem knows a lot more about this than I do though, so it would be best to ask him. He may even have solved some of the problems by now, I honestly don't know. Hopefully he can enlighten us though.

sure that's sad. eventually this site needs an upgrade to look at least half as clean as the sharepoint site so if any good template designer and php guy is out there who additionally knows how to backup old crumpy-coded phpbb forums, go get right on it!

It would certainly be nice to have a clean, new, site like sharepoint, but I think all the existing information on the site is far more important. Besides, I don't wanna lose my crown as posting king.
