Ah, EU3. As a game series, I think it is massively underated. Played it since
the origional.

I think the military is a huge improvement in EU3 (compared to 1 & 2), with
the idea of raising a regiment, which fights and gets reinforced as time goes
on being really cool. I'll stop now, 'cos otherwise I could spend forever
gushing about the game. ;-)

I was working on some cool new UI concepts at work today, and afterward I decided to go back and enhance the galaxy grid control for Supremacy. I've uploaded a test version. I'd appreciate it if a couple people could download it and test the changes, then report back on their experience.

Enhancements:

  • Hold the CTRL key and click & drag as an alternative way to scroll the map.
  • Hold the CTRL key and use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out of the map.
  • Double-click on a sector to center it on the screen, now animated.
  • Using the regular "Zoom In" and "Zoom Out" buttons should now correctly zoom in and out along the center of the viewport.
No other changes to the game, sorry.

I have to admit, I installed the new version last night then forgot to play it! :oops:

Reading the error message, it sounds like the graphic for the splashscreen may be missing, Zeleni - but i'm no dev so it may be something else. I'll see if I get this error message when i'm home and if so whether the splash screen image is missing or not.

The splash screen can't be missing--it's compiled into the game. It's one of the few things that can't be changed. I did that because the title screen can be changed for mods, and even if someone changes the game entirely, I still want people do know it's my game ;).

I've seen that error before, but not for a while. I don't remember exactly what caused it. Try running it a few more times, maybe you'll get lucky.

Also, it makes for better testing if you hit F12 to reveal the whole galaxy.

Chronus, the download is in Mikes post above - the one where he tells us about the new download. There is a standalone sentence that says "click to download" - try actually clicking on the sentence - it's a link for the game download. If you look closely, links are shown in a smaller font and in bold, so you can always tell them apart from the rest of a post. :wink:

I'm a moderator on these forums so i've added in the link in Mike's first post. I DIDN'T overwrite the old link though because of the problems - which incidentally i'm also encountering. My error seems to be different to what the others are experiencing though:

er.. that's a weird one. Did you unzip the new version into its own directory, or did you overwrite an older version? It should go into a clean folder.

The reason I didn't update the main post like I usually do is because I didn't really do much testing with this version, and I wasn't sure if people would have problems. Looks like this build may be a dud. I'm not sure why, though--it works on all three of my computers.

The game saves some personalized settings in isolated storage, which a new version *might* try to read if you overwrite an old version. This could be a problem if the format of the settings has changed.

I got a different error report this time - and it didn't occur instantly during the game load, unlike previously. It took about 5 seconds after I clicked on start game before the warning about an unhandled exception error message came up.

This might sound strange, but I noticed another problem as well. When I tried to make a desktop shortcut to Supremacy, the Supremacy icon didn't display, even though the shortcut was created. I thought it was a random glitch so I tried refreshing the screen, but that didn't work. I then tried manually selecting the Starfleet logo by clicking on change icon. (The icon did appear in the list) However, when I clicked on apply then ok, the icon still did not appear. The link itself works as normal though if I click it. :?

The Peregrine is part of my current desktop wallpaper. I just thought the aim was perfect. :P

wtf, that shouldn't happen... I'm about ready to give up and burn this project :evil:.

Anyway, you should be able to fix it by changing all of the galaxy options before you start a game. Once you successfully start a game that way, you shouldn't have the problem again.

Don't worry, it'll take more than a few annoying bugs to make me throw in the towel. I was just venting ;). Neverless, I appreciate the words of encouragement. Out of curiousity, did you manage to try out any of the galactic map enhancements, or did it blow up on your machine as well? :?

No, I haven't had the chance to yet. Tis the season with my job as many others; work has picked up, and I have more then my fair share of stuff to do. I will give it a try over the weekend holiday though.

<edit> well if figured what the hell I would give it a try, hey is is only 245am and I can't sleep.. I started the game and the main map menu loads behind its self so I cant choose how big I want the maps to be. I thought it maybe the SLi on my system, but disabling them did not help :( sorry about the bad report. but ya petty the fool that dont give feedback hehe!!

Supremacy is a great game and you've been working on this for a year now - look just how far you've come in all that time. If you don't do it for us, do it for yourself. Just imagine how you'll feel when it's complete and you'll have the entire forums doting on you and singing your praises. :wink:

Did you change the planet and star density as well, Matress? That should have done it :?.

OK, try applying this patch on top of the version you downloaded yesterday. This patch contains only the updated EXE and DLL files, so you'll need to copy them to the exiting folder (overwriting the files that are already there).

That fixed it! :mrgreen:

The densities were coming up blank - I haven't been able to select them. After installing your most recent update though, they were selectable. I guess there was a corrupt file or something somewhere.

*Edit - I've given Supremacy a test now, and I have to say it's working very well. The zoom is a little jittery at the lowest zoom levels, but certainly not so much that it's a problem.

My computer has a Pentium 4 540 processor @ 3.21Ghz, 1Gb RAM and a Radeon 9250 Graphics card. On a huge irregular map with dense stars and dense planets, the game took 42 seconds to load, and each turn was about 5 seconds. The bulk of the 5 second processing time was (As usual) the part where the game tries to "download the updated game state".

On a tiny cluster map with sparse stars and sparse planets, the game took 13 seconds to load and turns took about 4 seconds to load. Supremacy is fast, colourful, pretty, and fun. It's definitely the BOTF2 we've been waiting for. 8)

Now all we need is Diplomacy and tactical combat...

OK, now that it seems to work, I've updated the link in the main post. Again, the changes are:
  • Use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in/out of the map.
  • Hold the Control key, click and drag the map to pan around.
  • Double-clicking a sector centers it on the screen as before, but now the action is animated.
  • Raw material production increased somewhat. The figures are still meaningless, as I've yet to work out how the real values will be computed.


@Matress: The "cluster" galaxy configuration still doesn't work well on smaller galaxy sizes. It'll get reworked in the future.

@Valcoren: I've seen that happen before, but it's a very strange glitch. I didn't do anything to really change the way that the drop-down lists work, so it should display fine on any system. But then again, I've seen some very strange graphical glitches on some computers. You might be able to make a different selection by using the arrow keys on the keyboard (and then pressing <enter>) even if you can't click on them. I'll check it out, but it might be a Microsoft problem and not a problem with the game.

CHANGES SINCE LAST RELEASE:
I may not be able to compete with the Birth of the Empires development pace, but I can at least offer MOAR EYECANDY@#! :lol: (just kidding--respects to SirP and company). In this update, I have added animated stars to the galaxy map. However, because this feature might have a significant performance impact on slower systems, it has been disabled by default. You can turn it on via the Options screen in the Main Menu. NOTE: If the star animations are choppy on your system, try disabling high quality image scaling from the Options screen.

Excellent! It's funny, I never would have thought this could be done smoothly until I actually tried it. In fact, I think I laughed at Matress when he suggested it several months back :oops:. The cool thing is, it seems to work just as well on a huge galaxy as it does on a small galaxy.

I'm really interested to hear how this performs on different systems. I'd really appreciate it if anyone who downloads it could post about their performance with the animated stars switched on. In particular, I'm interested to hear if it slows anyone's system down (or animations are choppy), and if so, whether or not disabling high quality image scaling helps at all.
