I know I don't drop by much, buut..
I've been saying since almost right after What You Leave Behind that with such wide swaths of the Federation literally devastated, like post-WW2 Western Europe except for most of the entire Alpha and Beta Quadrants, that Star Trek could enter the new era with an enlightened, TNG-style crew in a glorious ship but with a mission that primarily deals with the chaos and suffering that results.
Pirates. Disasters. Opportunistic small races expanding power.
Given that the Federation was massive, it could easily have an exploration aspect heavily involved -- anybody ever read the Star Trek New Earth books? Like that, just post DW.
And, because our Captain would of course be some sort of highly respected figure, he could be sent in to the newly-reopened Gamma Quadrant to explore that bold new area.
Most of that could be done in a series or a movie to varying degrees. Make sure the captain gets his share of "action", both in combat and in the Captains Quarters, and whoola, mass appeal.
But, what do I know, I'm just a fan that mourns a franchise in a coma. :\
Oh, and btw, I thought all that long before BSG returned to TV. It just makes sense. BSG just saw the same cultural yearning, and fulfilled its wants.
