another blow for the gaming community. PE lost the nerve. Hopefully they get STO out before we be the only ones holding up the flag..

Link?

If they cancel Star Trek Online, I'm sure it won't be long until a community project starts up. There was once one, actually. (another one of those fan-games that never made it far)

unless someone hacked the site and no one noticed, that's it.

I don't think a fan-based game would ever get that far (you mean Star Trek 3D? I believe it never intended to be as big as WoW in ST-mode so to say). It's too much artwork to do IMHO.

it's more likely that some other universe gets modded which ain't a bad thing at all IMHO either.

so far STO still up on the list, but it's a severe financial blow, no doubt..

No, not Star Trek 3D, I can't remember the name...

A fan based MMO could go far, especially with a few good developers. Of course, it wouldn't be as big as WoW, but it can be done.

Art isn't a problem either, considering that we have most ship models done, and all you have to do is make the insides, and generic furniture and such. The only thing that would be difficult with art would be people and clothing.

i know nem, it all rests now on your shoulders..!

no kiddin, the problem with art in my eyes are the away-missions on those various spots and locations. Just think about star trek episodes and they are always beaming on surface somewhere. in order to make every single mission and experience unique one cannot just paint the color of the surface differently ;) one has to create unique house designs, surface terrain etc. along with people and clothing yes. And then there is the MMORPG server cost problem. it's quite expensive to have a million or so people download and play the game, so a fan-based MMO does have its severe setbacks too IMHO.

Dynamics!

Terrain is dynamic. House designs are made by anyone in Sketchup. People and clothing are a bit difficult, but everyone in starfleet wears the same, just with different colors.

Server Cost = Mediated P2P.
File Download/Updates = More BT/P2P
Money = Advertising.

Problems Solved. The only real hard part is coding it all

then I don't understand why GnH was cancelled. After all it was very close to completetion according to beta testers I know..
must be some money issue I just didn't see above that kept them from making some ;).

Rumor is that PE got some new investors telling them to dump the risky GoH and focus on the safe-bet STO.

If that is the case, I see it as pretty bad news. These investors obviously have no love for their product, and just want a quick and easy buck. A game being made under pressure from these guys is definately gonna be a disappointment.

if Legacy was made under pressure (see Abbs' last sentence). Since you worked on the team and AFAIK experienced pressure yourself bein' prevented from creating a mission editor by Bethesda in the first place, I thought you should know best ;).

besides, I'm sorry for the let-down concerning the ambassadore-thing (which I think is a sound and perfect idea). As I explained to MoE, I will "step back" here a little and give others a bit more (bote) space to fill in especially here on our forums (I mean I did half the post count on those..;)). The game is at a stage where everyone can play it and therefore can make himself expert on it that way so I'm no longer needed as living FAQ :).

On a side note, I hope you skimmed through that thread: http://botfii.armadafleetcommand.com/in ... pic&t=1829 . It explains my legal concerns about all this since the announcement of ST:Conquest. Not that I am that stupid to think we get kicked in the ass right now without the visually-attracting 3D-combat in place, but just imagine when this is in-game and we have a fan-produced ST:Conquest for PC (only ten times better ), to cut a long story short, I myself won't take this responsibility on my shoulders, if someone else wants, okay, he can step forward but I have my reservations. Noone's givin me money for the lawyer when things turn bad here so I hope you can understand my standpoint. You might say, well, you have tons of nice stand-alone fan-games listed on your site (like flash-trek) which are popular as well and never had any problems at all, but if you take a closer look, most of them are no longer being maintained (Red Alert and Final War 2) or have no half-way-exact commercial counterpart (as in Flash-Trek).
We do as in Conquest (no one knows yet if the 3D combat gets exactly as either in botf1 or conquest with the player able to command a ship personally though I doubt it'll be the latter).
I personally don't feel like attempting legal showdown with the company you formerly worked on ;). I'd need a written "fan-game-license" though you know the probability too for that ever going to happen..
But this is just my opinion for myself and no overall bote final word and since I'm just a contributor and moderator to bote and no real developer, sir p. has that honor :).

Yes there was pressure but that in and of itself doesn't mean bad will happen, only that such an environment is conducive to it. There was much that we wanted to do with Legacy but time and budget did not afford us.

No problems about the Ambassador role. I'm pretty much the only person working on content and there is soooooooooooooo much to do and I only have a sliver of free time to do things in, its practically impossible. So I just take a bite a day and maybe in a few years the site will have all the content I want it to. For the terrific few who volunteer as Ambassadors for games really really REALLY help because I just can't do it all.
