works fine then!
but the animations got slower now. effectively tearing down my old athlon 2600+ system. had to switch it off completely (remove the two tags in the options menu). it was better with the 3.0 .net ..

Remember the problems that I had with .Net 3.5 as well Mike? I think the fact that it's still beta software is the problem, it's still too buggy for general use with Supremacy.

.NET 3.0-friendly update has been posted.
Mal, let me know if you still have performance problems (before and after uninstalling .NET 3.5).

still perfomance lack in both cases. seems like it comes from the new 3.5 update which seemingly hasn't been completely removed by microsoft uninstaller though it said so..
the usual old planet animations in the system view get really slow and edgy (I even tried it again now with the 09/04/07 release, same problem. after turning the two tags off, it gets smooth again. Since i do not want to reinstall windows xp to test if it had something to do with the 3.5 update or if I was just wrong with my observation that it runned smooth the last time (i must admit I didn't look twice back then but I should have noticed it being that slow back then...). anyway cdrwolfe or moe, what system do you have? maybe you can try alternative settings too. either way, after installing 3.5 the animations must be turned off on my pc system, no other way..

Did you reboot after uninstalling .NET 3.5, Mal?
I'm curious about the animation performance problem. It runs fine on both my machines, but I'm running an Athlon64 X2 4200+ with an nVidia GeForce 7800GTX on my desktop and a Core 2 Duo 2GHz with an nVidia Quadro NVS 110M on my laptop. The desktop runs Vista, the laptop runs XP SP2. Both have 2GB RAM.

i did.
okay, it may be that I even missed it being slow the last time. The animation on the map ain't too slow for the casual look but if you look closer you see "steps" where it should be smooth. the planet animations show that even better, there the steps are plain visible due to the larger pixel size and more prominent view. anyway I do have 512 mb ram and a radeon 9200, basically a low-cost but relatively high-performance (back then in late 2003) system..
I should add though that my radeon does make problems lately. since i got my new widescreener, it has to draw on higher resolutions (1680x1050). I do have "hick-ups" lately, i.e. the monitor screens goes black for a second or starts with a totally scrambled view on bios boot and the only thing i can do is complete shut-down (no re-boot; real shutdown) or I run that session for a while in a 1024x768 resolution and change it back after 5 minutes.
might be my radeon finally gives up after 4 years of good service or it just cannot handle that high resolution very well in combination with my old enermax 350 power source..

Ok Mal, try this. Download and install . From the Start menu, open WPF Performance Suite -> WPF Performance Suite. Add a "Perforator" instance. Check the "Enable Debug Control" checkbox in the lower-left corner. Check the "Draw software rendering with a purple tint" checkbox on the right-hand side. Launch Supremacy and get to the galaxy screen. Alt+Tab over to Perforator, click the "Refresh" button in the lower-right corner, and then click SupremacyClient from the list. Switch over to Supremacy and look for any purple overlays. On my system, I only see them when I right-click to bring up the game menu. Let me know where you see them (a screenshot would be great). Thanks!

will try that asap.
btw. i was right, it's the resolution (knew it went well with the last release and my old monitor then). when i run in windowed mode and have roughly a 1280x1024 or below, it just runs fine on full settings!

That's very strange--the entire game is using software rendering rather than hardware rendering. Do you have the latest drivers installed for your video card (from ATI, not Microsot)? How about the latest DirectX?

i have the drivers installed that came with the pc. some ati catalysator IIRC. also directx is installed, I just ran a dxdiag.exe session that went ok (directx 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)). maybe i try and get new drivers for my old radeon but i do fear that might cause some problems cause the card's quite old.. due to the screen problems lately I'm thinkin it could be the card somehow "damaged" so some things like hardware drawing might not be possible with it anymore.
anyway I'll go to ati (or AMD now isn't it?) site asap and get the latest drivers. report back later.

Whoops! It is not working for me still. Will post the ServerError.txt in here since the Error.txt contains nothing. Here's what happens when I load up ST:S:
I could reach the main menu; there, I click on Single Player and choose Tiny, Irregular, Dense, Dense. Then up comes the loading background (the background of blue and red with stars) then it crashes to my desktop. Any ideas on what is wrong?

Has anyone else been able to play today's release without installing .NET 3.5? Has anyone else experienced the same problem as SeaBee-T?

whew, like i thought. installed new (from 2006; there wasn't any newer file on ati.com resp. amd.com) catalyst driver and boom, no direct3d at all possible anymore and my screen lags in terms of site displayin even in my browser right now big time.
will install old driver back. strange though, that direct3d is now defunct with new driver...

Eh crap, looks like .NET v3.5 is going to be required to play all Supremacy releases from here on out. I've taken down the link for now.

Well, like I said, Supremacy now requires the .NET Framework 3.5 Beta 2. You can either download it now (use the link in the original post) or wait a month or two until the final version of the .NET Framework 3.5 is released. Your choice. For those who want to install the beta framework and play the latest releases, I've restored the download link.
EDIT: Oh sweet, I have a Captain rank now. w00t!

Installed .Net 3.5 works fine though turns still take around a minute to process.

Yup. Works great for me too after installing .Net 3.5. The only part where I need to wait in between turns is when it is processing fleet movements. Otherwise, I'll get back to expandng the Federation's borders again. Great job, mstrobel!

Mike, aren't there different versions of .Net depending on whether you are 32 or 64 bit? You've only got a link to the 32 bit... Anyways, I was gonna mention about the window. Thought it had glitched on me at first because the window was going outside of the viewable area of my screen - I could only see the bottom half of the maximise/minimise/close buttons. My max resolution is 1280x1024. Changing the options corrected it, but it made the game options box (Planet densities etc) move over to the top left of the screen instead of being in the centre. I know, bit of a pedantic whinge, and it might've just been a random glitch. Restarting the game put the box back where it should be though so doesn't realy matter. I notice you've implemented some new things, Mike. Energy, Dilithium and Food? In BOTF, the game would always show you if a system contained bonuses on the Galactic map, without you having to physically click the system. The Food, Energy, and Dilithium icons would show up in the bottom-right of the screen, and if you put your mouse over those icons, the game would tell you the combined totals of the bonuses in the system. (So if you had 2 planets with a 25% energy bonus, putting your cursor over the system energy icon would show a 50% bonus) One thing i've noticed (But you probably already know about) is that the fog of war isn't working correctly - clicking a system that hasn't been scanned still shows whether there is a star in that system or not. It was like that in the previous releases though, so isn't just a mistake in this version. The planets aren't shown though so not a biggie. Keep it up Mike, the game is getting ever closer to completion...even if i'm constantly pointing out nice additions.
