you missed the chance 2 days ago ;)
no, honestly, as you surely have noticed, the site is undergoing some major facelift. in the process of that the downloads are down until they're made ready within the forum software.

there are no other downloads of bote in the meantime, so you just have to wait a few weeks till everything's in place.

Installation is now extra-easy since we removed all the "upgrade-fuss" and you simply get one installer to go. Still, you have to manually remove the bote fonts of previous alpha versions in your c:\windows\fonts folder and copy the new ones there, but that shouldn't be too much a problem i guess ;).

We made the AI a lot more aggressive btw. so playing could be hard if you're not already an experienced bote player. It can (and will) bombard planets now before it comes to invade them.

however we made the AI empires changeable in strength, i.e. you can set different difficulty levels in the bote.ini file after you installed the game. Set it to BABY (capital letters) or EASY for starters! :)

P.S.: the resolution thing is now also fixed so you should be able to play with your 1024x768 monitor that you had 3 months ago ;).

yes, i am ;)

download is 74 mb and growing :). manual space combat won't be in it before alpha6 I'm afraid so in other words you have yet to wait another year (i know somehow it sucks but at least you still got the chance to do something sensible in the meantime before you get totally sucked in the gameplay of bote ).

Whew, good to know that combat is still a ways off. I'd hate to get addicted to BotE and never finish Supremacy ;).

Well, i've tried adapting a so called do it yourself DX/C# 3D engine for early ship AI testing.

Only to realise i can't stand editing other peoples work because i have no clue how to do it :) and as it's in C# it's even harder still.

I don't know how you manage it MStrobel et al.

Drugs. Lots and lots of drugs. I actually find C# a lot easier to read than most languages, particularly ones like VB that have no tokens to identify where code blocks begin or end ('{', '}'), or even the end of a statement (';'). Of course, I've also been writing C# code on a daily basis for like 3 years now. I think C++ is by far the hardest language to read because of all the obscure macros and typedefs that get used (particularly in method declarations), though it can also be quite elegant, albeit easily abused.

Its not so much the differances in code, in more that i'm not used to OOP and classes and objects and how each one links to another when running etc.

Considering what i've had to code has never been substantial, i can get away with just having a few functions call each one in Main() and then let it run it's course.

I've been spending the last few days trying to get mouse click to work using 'MouseEventArgs' and all that stuff, it seems bodgery won't quite do for now :D

I checked the old forums, and the download link is giving me a 404. If someone can send me a copy of it, I'll upload it to the FTP and post a link.

Oh yeah, we'll have that downloads page up soon.

I saved a copy of the old wallpaper and New Beginnngs files, but I didn't keep a copy of the BotE installer coz I just assumed Mal would have a copy.

The downloads for the wallpaper and the New Beginnings files are still working on the old forums though, so you don't need me to send the files, Nem. But obviously i'll keep them just in case.

soon can mean many things... ;)

in this case it means it'll be soon till the new-contented version will be out. as far as serving the st-mod (anywhere) is concerned, that is up to someone else after having asked IP holders and taking over full responsibility for it. I guess then it's "showtime" who really thinks we're a bit over the edge with our concerns or not

Hmm forgot my password. Oh well.

Well I checked back every day for a month and your version of soon seems like my version of a while

1280*1024 really hurts my eyes, should I continue waiting or try and get someone to send me alpha4?

IB_, if you forgot your password, let Nemitor r Jigalypuff know what your original username, email address etc. was and they might be able to reset your password. I've actually got the power to fix it for you myself, but I don't like messing with the forum settings too much in case I break something.

...

If you've been waiting for BOTE all that time...then you're out of luck. BOTE is undergoing a major change at the moment and ALL Trek references are being removed from the game. This is purely for legal reasons and fears - BOTE is NOT in any sort of trouble as far as I know though, so don't panic!

Download links WILL be released in future, but these will be to download a de-treked version of BOTE. For example, the game will feature new races, technologies, and so on. (Humans are still an Empire though :P)

Trek mods may be released in future, but these will have to be made by the fans - then the devs will then be able to deny all knowledge such any recriminations occur; this will allow the original game to continue without fear of legal problems. Unfortunately this will also mean that someone will have to take on the responsibility themselves.

I know you may feel angry about this change, but please do NOT insult the devs for making this change; we have already had to BAN a forum member for insulting the devs and generally being a problem. Please don't force us to do the same again. Obviously you can say you're unhappy with the change - just say it tactfully.

The change was a decision that was made by the developers of BOTE, and was discussed openly on the forums for several weeks. Unfortunately not many people seem to have noticed, but this is the way it has turned out and people will have to accept it. The change does NOT affect Supremacy, Allegiance, or New Beginnings however - these games are still planned to have Trek content.

It's easier and quicker just to make a new account.

I don't really care if its trek or not, I just like the great gameplay. Just having to play on high res hurts my eyes, and I believe Mal said that alpha 4 had adjustable resolution.

I also have a problem playing Supremacy, .NET 3.5 breaks another game I play often so I can't play it. Though I did try it and liked it, the version I played had a memory leak.

automatically adjustable to windows screen resolution, yes. In order to play on lower resolution than your monitor's standard or native one, you have to reduce screen res on the windows control panel menu for screen settings and then bote automatically adapts to that resolution. Maybe in future alphas this can be induced separately by bote itself.

IB_, if you could let Mike know PRECISELY what your problems are, what this other game was, any error messages you received, and so on in This Thread then he may be able to trace the cause of the problem and fix it. Mike replies on as many people as possible to play his game and to submit reports of their experiences as possible - if people don't tell him about problems, he won't know about them and assume everything is fine. :(

Desktop properties > settings is what I use to change the screen res. In alpha3 if you play at 10*7 you can't select any ships as they are off screen. Is there a RESOLUTION= Line I can add to the ini?

desktop properties->settings is what I meant.

as I said, not to alpha3, nor 4 (alpha4 does it automatically), maybe 5 or 6.

wait for the new release with the new content you can try out then ;).
