HEY i'm very new to the forum world so i'm a little slow. I've only just realised that botf 2 is a fan made game which i am so happy about cos i love the first game and still play it constantly. I'm just a tad confused as to why there are 3 different projects.....supremecy..bote and alliengence. which one is actually a sequal and how will i know when they are availiable to download.. Forgive my stupity but i would really appreciate some help.

Hey there, I'll try a brief summary, well they're all active projects :

BOTE has BOTF style gameplay, been around the longest so its pretty advanced in terms of implemented gameplay, but currently unavailable for download as it is undergoing "de-trekkfication", later, trek content will be added back as a mod to the game.

Supremacy again has BOTF style gameplay, "only" a year or so in development, no AI and you can't win yet, but it's constantly updated and looks awesome.

Allegiance - It's a browser game, I don't know much about it.. but it has Star Trek content, and it's in closed alpha.

There, short summary. As to when they're available to download, BOTE will be available again in about a month according to Malvosin. Supremacy is available right now, and just been updated an hour ago . Allegiance is still in closed alpha and under development.

Thanks For The help, in your opinion tho, which game will be the closest thing to an accurate sequal to the original botf. I'm hearing things like you can be the dominion too and thats just the icing on the cake. Long live weyoon lol...

I kinda understand your confusion with a name like that...but I digress. I seem to do that a lot actually...

Strings's summary of the games is correct, there are different game projects because each game is trying to be something a bit different - and we actually have more projects than you mentioned.

If you want to know which game is going to be the closest thing to BOTF though, that game would be Supremacy. It isn't intended to be a carbon copy with some new bells and whistles though, it is a completely new game from scratch - which also means no more annoying memory leak!

This doesn't mean you should discount Birth of the Empires though - the BOTE project was started by a group of Germans way before our project even existed. We became aware of each others' existance a few months ago and have been working together ever since for mutual benefit. Unfortunately, BOTE is being stripped of all its' Trek content for legal reasons (The project isn't in trouble of any kind, it's more because of the fear of legal issues than anything else), but in every other sense it is still also a join contender for the title of "BOTF2". Mods will also be actively supported - in fact they will be encouraged - so Trek will make its' way back in to BOTE, in one way or another.

Allegiance is a browser game and so it will be a lot like X-Wars or Ogame. It won't be a game where you click a button and take a turn, it will be more real-time in the sense that you take an action, then may have to wait minutes or hours before that action is actually completed. It will be a game with a dynamic Universe that you will have to keep returning to as and when you have a bit of free time - which may seem boring and long-winded if you haven't played such games before, but trust me, this also makes the game much more addictive. Don't forget, people on the other side of the world will be playing while you sleep, and vice-versa. It won't be long before your primary concern is when you can get back online to make sure you havent been attacked or to see if your latest building project is complete!

The one project that hasn't been mentioned so far is New Beginnings - this is a game that is being made by the BOTF1 modder extraordinaire Jigalypuff - if you've ever modded BOTF, then chances are you've probably tried a mod that he had at least some involvement in! New Beginnings is a completely different genre of game, and will be more like Bridge Commander than anything else, but that's all we really know about it. Jig is being absolutely secretive until the game is closer to release. We do know that you'll be playing captain and sitting in the big chair though - and Jigalypuff was asking for models of Cardassians a few months ago - and I mean Cardassian people, not Cardassian ships. It's definitely gonna be interesting once released...

I hope that bit of background info will help you to understand the intricacies of the project. As you already noticed, we are a fan-based project and are replying on the time and effort of people from across the world, but none of us are being paid to do this. It would be completely illegal to do so as we do not own the Trek licence, and unfortunately we don't have a spare couple of million to buy it from Bethesda. Setting up a donation scheme would also be illegal so don't even ask.

We've got plenty of work that needs to be done though, so if you have any skills that you think you could offer to the project, then go right on ahead and offer. You won't get if you don't ask.
