From Trekmovie:

And so it begins. Up until today all this talk about a new Star Trek movie was just that…talk. But in theaters around the world moviegoers seeing the ever-so-hyped Cloverfield were treated to the teaser trailer for the new Star Trek. This is getting real.

The Future Begins
Firstly the previously reported description of the Star Trek teaser is pretty much accurate. The trailer starts with a welder who could be from any time and slowly reveals that he and swarm of other workers are building the USS Enterprise in a dockyard somewhere on Earth. Ominous musical cues punctuate flashes between black, images of workers and glimpses of the ship in a dramatic fashion. We hear the sounds of JFK and NASA during the heyday of the space race followed by the slogan “THE FUTURE BEGINS”– which appears to be the message of the trailer.

Everything old is new again
This is followed by Nimoy’s “space the final frontier” voice over, the reveal of the USS Enterprise saucer, the unmistakable Alexander Courage TOS sting, and the TOS transporter sound effect beaming in a title card “UNDER CONSTRUCTION,” the new TOS-style logo, and credits. These are all nice touches and should bring a tear to the eye of any Trekkie. By the time the “USS ENTERPRISE” reveal hit the screen the audience in the theater I attended started to applaud…a welcome sign for a bunch of young Culver City hipsters there to see the first showing of Cloverfield.

The ship?…out of danger?
As for the look of the ship at first glance it seems much larger than what we are used to and perhaps that is the point. From what can be seen of the design it clearly retains the general shape of the TOS Enterprise, but we see far more TMP style detailing and the proportions seem different…especially the engine nacelles which are ginormous. The design seems to fall somewhere in the middle between ‘exact copy’ and ‘radical redesign,’ possibly closer to the original than most might have expected. I have never been a purist and so for what I can see so far it looks pretty good. But I sure want to see what the whole thing looks like.

Land Ho
As for the Enterprise being constructed on Earth, this seems to strangely be stirring up quite a bit of controversy. Of course the plaque on the bridge of the USS Enterprise has the words ‘USS ENTERPRISE’ and ‘San Francisco, Calif.’ on it…and last time I checked, San Francisco is firmly attached to the planet. If you want to go further it was established in TNG that the Enterprise D was also at least partly constructed on the ground (in that case the Utopia Planetia on Mars). Star Trek The Motion Picture set up the notion of the Enterprise being refit in space and so many might assume that it was also entirely built there, but that is really just ‘fanon.’ After speaking to a number of canon experts, all seem to agree that constructing the ship (at least partly) on land is well within Star Trek canon. Plus an argument can be made that it makes more sense to build a ship on land as it is a much less hostile environment. Oh…. and…it’s just a TV show.

This is big
Bottom line is that the teaser trailer delivers exactly what it had to do. It sends the message that we today are linked to Gene Roddenberry’s future with the USS Enterprise and her crew. It also creates a new sense of majesty and epic style for the franchise that has not been seen since the time of Star Trek The Motion Picture. The message here to the general film audience is, like this ship being built, Trek is big…really big…and JJ Abrams is building it right now.

It has been said that the new film will have construction of Enterprise start in area 51. Not the area 51 of urban legend and little green men. The area 51 where top secret aerospace technology is developed in the Nevada desert.

They didn't even do that for the NX-01, so I'm a bit skeptical, but hey, as long as it's entertaining...

That model looks awfully similar to the military remake that someone made last year. It's toned down slightly, but that new curvy bit on the engineering hull and the fin on the saucer were both in that model. Methinks someone actually listened to the fans for once and based the new model on the new vision.

Ok, my opinion of this film has gone from near-boycott to mildly interested. :P

I would guess that San Francisco stands for home port. It does not seam likely that the ship would be built in a dense urban area. There is the Presidio base but currently it is more a national park than a military base. Area 51 has fabrication. The workers live in Las Vegas, Nevada and are flown in by passenger jet each day.

The writers could make it anything they want. JJ is frustrated by the writers strike. He has wanted to change a few things on the fly. Changes like that will have to wait for the strike to end.

The trailer is interesting but does not show as much as I would like.

It is very conservable that the Enterprise could have been built in SF she was only 289 meters in length that is close to size of a WW2 battleship.

However Star trek.com states that San Francisco Yards orbits Earths
Enterprise, U.S.S.
TOS 001 - The Cage
Launched in 2245, the original and illustrious starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 was built in the San Francisco Yards orbiting Earth. The Constitution-class starship was previously captained by Robert April and Christopher Pike, before coming under the command of Captain James T. Kirk.

The buss is that the movie may show the Enterprise being built on the ground in the area 51 section of the Nevada desert. It is said that the writers want to tie today with the fantasy tomorrow of the trek universe. This has been offered as an explanation for rewriting trek history. If it is built on the ground in any event it finding that much open ground in San Francisco would be a challenge. Even in WW2 it was home port more than ship yards. We will see when the film comes out.

The only thing I can think of is that it's set after WW3 and 5 billion people are dead. When the nukes fall, there's plenty of room to rebuild...not that you'd want to for a while.

Actually, there's plenty of rubble in the way... it's still rather silly considering it was already established that ships were constructed in orbital yards, even in the Enterprise series.

I see now where Roberto Orci has confirmed it will be constructed on the ground and the location is not area 51. He would not say if it was or was not going to be in the rubble of San Francisco.

That image is old. I saw it a long time ago on the internet. I don't think they've used Photoshop in Trek before, either. :P

EXCLUSIVE from (Trekmovie.com): As the creator of the independent fan production Star Trek New Voyages, James Cawley has sought to recreate an exact replica of Star Trek The Original Series, right down to the braid on Kirk’s sleeve and the color of the bridge railing. So it is not surprising that he has been on the skeptical side with regards to JJ Abrams’ Star Trek ‘re-invigoration.’ But a chance encounter on the Paramount lot has turned the purist Calwey around…so much so that he is now literally ‘on board.’ In an exclusive video interview (below) Cawley tells TrekMovie.com all about his new Trek adventure and what he now thinks of Abrams and his new Enterprise.

Sounds like Cawley has merely fallen in love with JJ Abrams. No disrespect to Mr. Abrams, but I'll avoid passing any real judgment until I actually see the film. Until then, however, I reserve the right to question some of his design decisions...

I agree. It is interesting to follow the production but we are yet to see how or if it will all fit together.

Along those lines:

Star Trek producer/director JJ Abrams (and members of his team) will be doing a live ‘chat’ from the set of Star Trek…here on TrekMovie.com on Friday. DETAILS BELOW.

1-4 PM Friday
Starting at around 1PM Pacific (4PM Eastern/9PM UK) JJ Abrams will begin answering questions from the set here in the comments section. He will start from a selection of questions posed by that time, but may also take new questions that come up during the session.

But wait…there’s more (Trek crew answering questions)
JJ will be joined by producer Damon Lindelof, writer Bob Orci and exec. producer Bryan Burk. It is also possible that other behind the scenes folks or actors will join in as well. So feel free to submit questions to Orci, Lindelof, and Burk. And if you want to chance it ask questions of any of the actors (if they aren’t there we will see if we can get them answered later)

Submissions:
You can start submitting questions for Abrams now in the comments section below. Just like on Jeopardy, please make them in the form of a concise question. If you are asking a question to anyone other than JJ Abrams, then note who you want to answer the question.

To make it easier on JJ, myself and others, please just submit questions for now…and please avoid comments on other people’s questions or other diversions. (and no need for comments on how extremely cool it is for him to do this here on TrekMovie.com…we know and are honored already)

NOTE: The producers will answer as many questions as they can, please do not despair or take it personally if yours is not answered.

Once the event starts you will probably have to reload the page once or twice to see the answers…be patient. When the event is over TrekMovie.com will put together a concise ‘transcript’ in Q&A form in a separate article.

Playmate commercial from the 90s

It has been the stated intent that the new Star Trek movie will move the venerable Trek franchise back into the broader mainstream audience. One area where this will manifest itself is in merchandising and TrekMovie.com has learned that a big step has been taken by awarding the toy license for the new Star Trek movie to Playmates Toys. This is actually a ‘coming home’ for Trek toys as Playmates held the license for much of the 90s but dropped it in 2000.

Details are still sketchy but sources indicate that (at a minimum) Playmates will be making action figures, prop toys and ship models from the new feature film. Work on prototypes has already started (at least for the figures). It is expected that an official announcement will come in February during the ToyFair trade show in New York. Toy retailers (but not the general public) may even be given a preview of the Playmates Star Trek line so they can make purchase decisions for winter 2008. Diamond Select/Art Asylum, who picked up the license for Star Trek after Playmates dropped it in 2000, will continue to carry the license for Star Trek items from the previous TV and film series.

Playmates is capable of getting Star Trek toys back to major retail stores which is very important if Star Trek is going to labeled as "cool again" by both fans and the general movie-going public. Playmates is one of the largest toy companies with distribution at all the major retailers such as Target, Wal-mart, Toys R Us, K-Mart, and Kaybee Toys. They made the toys for the recent King Kong movie and currently hold license for Teenage Mutant Ninga Turtles and Disney Princesses. They also manufacture the popular line of "Elite Force" military action figures and toys.
