Hey Ghost Line, welcome to the forums! :)

Quote:
when you're looking for loading a game, what about loading it by double clicking on the file

Double-clicking files is a good idea, i'm sure Mike will consider adding it in future.

Quote:
in the higher zoom, biggers vessels symbols could be better for see them

Some changes to the symbols may be made in the future. We've already discussed bringing back the old botf-style O and S symbols for Outposts and Starbases, but there wil be new station types as well, such as the Depot (A very basic station with refuel capabilities) and the Science Station (A long-term research station that is dedicated to studying stellar phenomena, providing you with a small research boost). We'll need to think of appropriate designations for these stations too. Mike may be able to add larger icons when he does this.

Quote:
the tech tree : I regret you've to develop weapons systems to go on the general technology tree

I'm not sure what you're talking about regarding the weapons systems - could you explain what you mean in more detail?

Quote:
symbolize the docking stations on the systems representations

This would be nice, but the system screen already contains a LOT of information - yet another symbol only adds to the clutter...

Quote:
the possibility of being centered on the system you're working on. I explain : in the last hours of my gaming test, I've finished to go through the systems via the rollover menu ... and I haven't found a simple way to know where this system is on the map. So what's about, I don't know, perhaps a minimap, or an icon to quit the gestion menu, centered on the right system?

The addition of a minimap has been mentioned before, but I dn't know what Mike thought about the idea. We'll have to wait and see what he says.

Quote:
when you choose a building in the building list, a picture appears in the right of the screen : if you go to the shipyard, the picture (and description) keep in that place ... what about blanking it, or placing a generic ship picture?

That's possibly, a bug, and the same thing happens to me. It also happens if you look at a building then go to the shipbuilding screen. Thanks for pointing that out!

Quote:
I've seen some bugs, too. There's you probably know, like the fact the game use 50% of my CPU, and 1 gig of RAM ; the fact that when you create a new galaxy, the rollover menu is shown behind the general menu. There's the two major bugs I've found.

Mike only recently made the game take advantage of multiple cores, so the code is still buggy and doesn't always work. More testing is needed in that area. The menu bug is also well-known, but thankfully is relatively rare. When i happens, the best thing to do is to close the game and reload it. Mike is working on the problem, and will include the fixes in a future update.

Again, welcome to the forums. :)

Thanks for the welcome ;)

And sorry for my english, I miss practicing (I'm french).

What I mean for the tech tree :
I've red several of the first pages of this topic, and see there was no armed opposition so far ; so in the tech tree, I've put the weapon research to 0%. But at the lvl 5 or so far of all the other trees, I've seen that nothing or so was newly buildable ; so I've just put the weapon tree back on in order to reach lvl 2. And then, a lot of new things came to ... and lvl 3 too.
So ! if I want to make -let's imagine it !- a civilization based on non violent behavior, without weapon (yup, I'm an idealist ;)), at this time, I can't access even the first level hospital ship (or there is another combination to reach it, but it might be more than that I've done), nor the 2nd and 3st lvl of basic buildings. I think it's somehow a pity ... but it's my own opinion ^^

Welcome Ghost Line. We are glad to hear the feedback on the game.

How is your spoken English? We are looking for help with a number of projects. One of these is recording dialog for the game. We need a lot of different voices. There are different personalities in each of the major races and some 145 minor races. For more information look here.

Oh, now I understand you. Yes, this is something that is going to be addressed in future - afterall, it's stupid that you need weapons to upgrade a farm.

I've actually made some small changes that are in the latest version of Supremacy that removed some of these stupid requirements, but if you've only ever played the most recent version then you won't notice this difference. :P

If you ever have trouble understanding what I say, feel free to ask me to rephrase it. I find Altavista's Babelfish Translator is useful as well.

kenneth> my spoken english might not be that bad ^^ I've just little problems in sentences construction, but if it's just reading a text, it might be ok. I've definitly to take a look at your links ^^

Matress> ok, it explains a lot  and when I find a word I can't seem to understand, I've other methods that Babelfish ... reading and writing on forum (sing. : fora . I love this one ^^) is a way like another to learn an everyday english, no ? ;)

PS : I don't use an automated translator to write on forum ... if you try to translate this literally in french, it might be a mess ^^

Wow. Glad you're liking the game, carcher! :P

Yes this is the right place to post - but don't worry if it wasn't, we're pretty easy going on noobs - unlike some other forums I know of. (X-Wars)

If you have any problems, post them here and we'll do our best to solve the problem. We'd love to hear any ideas that you - or anyone else - has as well. Whilst these projects are being headed and largely made by individuals, they are still a community effort, and would not be what they are today without that community input. Feedback and ideas are the best way to ensure the game(s) end up working the way that you want them to.

Welcome to the forums. :)

thanks for the welcome MOE . I must admit i feel a little bit guilty about not posting my thoughts on the game sooner ,ive had so much pleasure out of suprenacy its unreal .Im afraid i cant contribute much as far as programing is concerend (spelt that wrong!) but if you need someone to do any testing i have the time (about 3-4 hours after work on weekdays) and the inclination to test its ass off. Ive had few probs so far ,the biggest one is the flickering sumery window when in the main screen.Another minor prob is that in sol system one unit of the work force seems to go skiving off into the labour pool every turn (no big deal to me but i dont know if this type of info is useful to you).Things i love -well..... the ui.. the waypoints..the way you can load the build list.. the ENORMOUS map..the ship refuelling/range .All good stuff ! keep it comming PLEASE.Im going to bed now - I am knackered ! I ll post again tomoz when i get home

Hmm...those are bugs i'm not familiar with, unless by 'flickering sumery window' you mean the relatively rare bug where the main menu ends up covering the clickable buttons before you've even started playing the game. (But it sounds like that's not what you're referring to)

Since i've not heard of these, you'll have to wait and see what Mike says about the problems. If the game ever crashes on you or you get any error message though, (God forbid) please post about them here as well. If the game crashes, it *should* create a report about why it happened in a file called 'error.txt', which you can find in your main Supremacy folder. (Wherever you saved it) Just copy-and-paste the entire contents of that file (Or attach the file to a post) so that Mike can see what the problem is.

Hey carcher, good to hear from you. Glad you've liked the game so far :).

carcher wrote:

There is a hotfix available from Microsoft which may alleviate this issue. I've added links in the main post. Look for the section entitled "GRAPHICAL PERFORMANCE ISSUES" right under the download link. There are separate patches available for Windows Vista and Windows 2003/XP, so grab whichever applies to you. Let me know if it helps or not :).

Also, the new units of labor appearing in your labor pool are most likely new labor units resulting from population growth. One unit of labor will appear for every 10 units of population in a system. These will stop appearing once you hit your maximum population level. New labor units will remain in the labor pool until you put them to work. The one exception is that new labor units will be automatically assigned to Food production if you currently have a food deficit. If you're pretty sure this isn't the case, let me know and I'll file it as a bug and investigate :).

Cheers,
Mike

Hi Mike thanks for the post.I tried the hotfix - no luck! but not to worry i can live with it.Re my labour force prob, i'm sure i was up to max pop when it was happening (turn 80 or so) but it's not happening tonight, so maybe you're right, i'll keep my eye on it.Anyway,a few questions if you don't mind.(i know you must be busy!).Are you planning on having a drop down summary window in the system screen? with a list of the system builds, moral an food etc?I think this would make empire managent much easier for the player.how about a grid ref nunber in the system screen to make it easier to find the said system on the main map?One last thing ,for now, in the future when starting at the higher tech level, how about having one or two minor races in your chosen empire?Or would this affect the game balance ? Anyway i think i've bent you'r ears-eyes ? whatever - enough for one night.Cheers ,over and out Kev.Opps!! Carcher.

Hey carcher, as I said above, there are two ways to post an error report. This is how you do it:

  • The easiest way is to create a new post, then open the file called 'error.txt', and to copy-and-paste the text in the file into your post.
To do this, you need to first select all of the text by pressing the ctrl + A buttons on your keyboard, or by highlighting all the text by clicking-and-dragging your mouse over the text. This may be difficult if the file is particularly large though, so the keyboard method is usually easier.
You then need to copy the information into your computer's memory by pressing the ctrl + C buttons on your keyboard, then go to your post, click in the black box to ensure the text cursor is flashing, and press the ctrl + V buttons on your keyboard to paste in the text.
Then just click on the submit button and you'll have a post with the error report in it.

  • The second way of doing it is by uploading the file itself as an attachment. This may be useful if you've got a dodgy keyboard or the error report is particularly long.
To do it, create a new post, then scroll down to the bottom of the screen and look for a button that says 'browse'. Click it.

    Image

A new window will open showing the files on your computer. Find the file called 'error.txt' in your Supremacy folder in this window, then click the file. The box to the left of the browse button will update to show the location of the file on your computer. (If you accidentally click the wrong file, you can just click browse again and select the correct file )

    Image

Click on the 'Add the file' button, and a small window will appear with a bar showing that it is uploading the file from your computer. The window will disappear once this has completed. (If any error messages appear, read what they say - there are unfortunately limits on the file size and file types that can be uploaded)
Click on the submit button as though you were posting an ordinary post, and at the bottom of your new post will be a blue link where people can download your file. I've attached a sample file so you can see. Click the download link, then click open to open it, or save to save it.

Hi folks,

I'm a newbie here, huge fan of BotF but as well all know it could be better. So after finally getting the Supremacy download link to work I started it up and am very impressed. I do have a problem though.

On turn 15, my Gigabyte software starts up telling me that I've just plugged in a microphone (which I didn't), and after I close that down Supremacy starts going whacky - the interface doesn't like responding and the graphics start swapping and changing all over the place. I tried to get it to work with a fresh second game, but the same thing happened. I also saved it the second time and re-loaded at which point the graphics were fine, but the game refused to go past the 'load pre-turn information' stage when the 'end turn' button is pressed.

Just thought I'd let you know of this in case you didn't already know.

Otherwise many thanks for the amazing work so far.

Hey Darth Windu...nice name, but aren't you on the wrong forums? (Hardcore Trekkies might lynch you )

Nah, just kidding. We're all friends here. :)

Would it be possible for you to attach your save file so Mike can check if perhaps the game is corrupt or something? Games save as the .sav filetype in your Supremacy folder. Just follow my instructions for attaching a file in my previous post (Page 71 of this thread) and upload any .sav files you have. It would be useful if you could post any information contained in your error.txt file as well, although there may not be anything in there because the game is not physically crashing.

Could you also post your computer stats for us? This might help us check whether there is some sort of incompatibility or whether underpowered components are to blame. We need to know your operating system, processor speed/type, RAM, and your graphics card(s). In your case, information regarding your sound setup might be useful as well.

With any luck that might help to trace the possible problem and fix it for you. Welcome to the forums. :)

Am I? I didn't notice. I'll try to keep things more concise from now on, but I like to go on. I can't help going on, that's just the way I do things. I like to help people, and if you're gonna do something, you should do it right. So I go into lots of detail. All the time. That's just the way I am. Sorry about that. I don't do it on purpose. Really. Well, actually I do as I just said, but you can always just skim that fact. In fact you probably did anyway. Tut. No one ever listens. Woe is me.

I downloaded the graphical performance Hotfix last night and ,as i posted ,it did'nt work ( i'd shutdown and restarted )I played a few turns of the saved game tonight, then decided to load a new game, and be really meticulous-in taking note of anything that may be of use to Mike and the Supremacy team. Guess what ....the hotfix is now working -i'm over the moon-the main screen looked great before,it now looks FANTASTIC!!. Thanks Mike (aka king of the world!)
Anyway at turn 8 of the new game i got a strange message -"comunications grid constructed in sector Avenal". the galaxy settings were- large, irreguler, dense(not me!),dense (stop laughing!)and many.i've no other system showing in the main screen(i hav'nt even built a ship yet)The error file is empty-as you'd expect, and i do'nt think it's a "hangover" from my previous game.
MOE thanks again for the detailed info last night. I made a short reply 'cause i was about to turn in for the night - i'd had a few wine gums-ya know? I'll get back to the game now , and see what my "ghost" system gets upto.

While I've been on the website for a couple of months now, this is my first post on the forum. I like how Supremacy is coming along. I am making this post to point out a few of the problems that I've seen.

1.) As a die-hard Romulan, I feel the need to point out that a.) the homeworld is Romulus, and b.) if you can watch Nemesis and say the Remus is an M-class planet, lay off the ganja; it's J-class, easily.

2.) The "Mintaka" system is called Mintakans ( :?: ) and inhabited by humans ( :!: ). Just putting it out there.

3.) The Omarian Nebula (as the founder homeworld, other instances seem fine) reads Omarian Nebula Nebula.

I shall, of(f) course, point out any other inconsistancies that I find, as that is my nature. Nonetheless, a well done program and a worthy sequal to BOTF.

MK

Hey mknote, welcome to the forums. :)

The problems that you've noted are extremely easy to solve - they only require minor edits in the editor. I can even show you how to do them if you want. (I've learned my lesson from my last posts, i'll ask you first hehe)

The human inhabitants mistake is a hangover from a recent bug - if you look hard enough, you'll find that there are other races suffering from the same problem. This again is easily fixed in the editor, it's just more of a tedious one because it will require manually going through all of the minor races.

Mike has changed the way tha some of the information is stored in the game, so *some* of it saves into a database rather than a simple text file. I don't know what files contain this database because it is non-human-readable, which means I might not be able to upload 'fixed' files that will correct all these problems. I'll see what I can do about sorting out any incorrect info in the text files though.

*Edit - hmm...looks like the editor isn't working in the current version of Supremacy. We're going to have to wait until Mike posts an update before I can look at fixing the remaining issues.

Thank you for the kind welcome Matress. :)

Yeah I figured it was an odd nickname to use, but it's my net-wide nickname so I figured I might as well keep it. I was a Trek fan long before I was a Star Wars fan though, so no need to worry there :P

My computer stats are-

Windows XP Sp2
AMD 6000+ dual-core (two 3.0Ghz cores)
Gigabyte geforce 8500GT graphics
2Gb DDR2 DDR667 RAM
On-board sound

Actually just thought of something, I really lowered the sound hardware acceleration in a vain attempt to get the original 'ST: Armada' to work, I'll push it back up and see if anything changes.

Oh one more thing - this has probably been answered before, but why does a Cruiser take 3 turns to build, and a Scout takes 11 turns?

NOTE: I tried to attach the save game file, but the system just told me "The extension sav is not allowed."

EDIT: I tried again after changing my sound hardware acceleration, and it seemed to go alright until turn 15 yet again launched my Gigabyte software thinking I'd plugged a microphone into the green plug... Anyway I saved and re-started it and it went alright for another two turns or so, and then the graphics started playing up again. I'll try and take a screenshot of it to show you exactly what I mean.

I found that running the game in Vista rather than XP on the same hardware reduced turn time from five to six minutes down to one to two seconds.

The rest I do not know about.

Actually, the game ran slightly better for me under XP, due mostly to Vista's composition manager (DWM). If you turn off DWM, it's about the same (and the hotfix helps as well). That only affects the perceived responsiveness of the UI, though--the turn processing time shouldn't be affected.

Darth Windu, I'm not sure what is causing your issue, but I suggest that you create a shortcut to SupremacyClient.exe, right-click the shortcut and select "properties", then add the "-NoMusic" argument (without quotes) to disable the music engine:

Mike, Supremacy just crashed on me when I tried to retire from a game. (I've been making screenshots for Jig) I checked and it was a random error - it doesn't happen every time you click retire. Still thought you'd want to know about it though...

...because that's got to be the shortest error.txt information ever!

The editor still isn't working, by the way. So when's the next update? :P

*Edit - the above error just came up when I also tried to close the game. Maybe something else is causing it...?

I know what's causing that, and I'll try to remember to fix it before the next release (which won't be for a while).
