Do random event entities, monsters, devices need 270x225.png images? :borg:

Also the ship list includes the SPHERE BUILDERS' SPHERE. Are we really talking about a Dyson's sphere? How do we use a model of a Sphere that has the diameter of an inhabitable planets orbit? Not only is it larger than a planet or sun but it would make all ships and station microscopic.

We've got the images of the random events from BOTF, but we want to get rid of them and make our own. I've not actually made a list of which randoms need event images, so i'll have a look at making one for you in the jobs section.

However, we still don't know whether any, some, or all of my randoms will be in the game or not.

I was wondering if we should have a different way of uploading the 270x225.png beauty shot images for models. In the images section of Sharepoint you do not seam to be able to download without getting it back as a .jpg and altered name. Should I be putting the images in with the other model files .rar or uncompressed in the same folder or does it matter.

:borg: I would still have a image we can look at for reference.

I was actually wondering about that. If the images really are being converted by the site then we need to keep them somehow as .png files. Zipping would help to do that and would reduce the memory demands on the site, while also making it easier to keep track of the files. Doing that would mean we wouldn't be able to have the image galleries though. We would need to double-post the images in separate folders or something. It's up to you you how you sort it Kenneth.

...By the way, does this mean Sharepoint is back? Do the acounts work?

Hmm...perhaps the site is keeping the .png's afterall but has to temporarily convert the files to .jpg's to be able to show them in explorer mode? In explorer mode Mal, the files sometimes come out as ".png.jpg". :?

hm, if the site was up again I'd try it out. Anyway, those jpg's are auto-generated thumbnail images that are stored in a different folder. If explorer mode switches to that folder, then of course you only get the jpgs. Actually I get some bad requests right now when trying to call some images there but I guess that's normal after the crash..

So can we set up file storage here? :?:

I have a lot of backup files but worry that I am the only one with some of this material. There is voice acting and music beside the models.

For images I am guessing I could link to the 270x225.png files in a thread here so we have a visual record of the models on file. The Federation is farthest along in reconstitution. Before the end of the month I hope to have their fleet completed along with scaling and standard orientation applied. :borg:

@MOE: The backup, restoration, of ship models is well underway but I just wanted to double check with you about what it says on your ship lists, page one of this thread.

1). Tankers are still listed for the majors but they are really Construction ships? :?:

2.) Fighters listed in the minors are now called Attach Ships? :?:

3.) Do the Freighters become Transports or are they still Freighters or what? :?:

I really need to update that list for you, but it's basically yes to all three.

  • Tankers are NOT a ship class in the game. They are now construction ships. All of the Empires will ned a construction ship, so if they haven't got one we will need to add them.
  • "Fighters" and "Attack Ships" is an interchangeable name, although I would personally put fighters as the very smallest or cheapest armed ships, and Attack Ships as slightly larger ships up to the size of Destroyers. I think it is best if we keep both names, but generically call them Attack ships from now on. We could keep "Fighters" as simply an alternate designation for some of the alien ship classes then, eg Dreadnought vs Warbird.
  • Freighters are NOT in the game. If you find any in the shiplist, rename them to Transports. If the race already has a Transport, but doesn't have a Construction ship, put them as a Construction ship instead.

One thing we haven't discussed is the possibility of the minor races building outposts and bases. This would mean the creation of yet more models (Or at least the creation of one generic one), and there are questions over how the AI would handle them, but it would be a nice addition.

Now i'll start tidying up the shiplist for you. If possible, it would really help if you could send me a copy of the ship images that you have, info on the completion status of the models, and the credits for the models where possible. PM me the download links or email them to me.

*Edit - I've removed Tankers from the shiplist and relabelled them as Construction ship where necessary. The Construction ship is listed after the final battleship but before their first outpost in the shiplist for each of the races. The Federation and Klingons have a Construction Ship, the Romulan ship is a Fabricator, The Cardassian ship is a Slave Rig, and the Dominion ship is a Construction Vessel.

Thanks and I will translate those names.

I see in the ship list that the Ferengi get an outpost and I have a model. I can upload a few others if we decide to let minors build there own.

The major race models are in massive flux right now so I am not able to give a listing of their status. We have now something for all the major race ships and models. A few are not textured and some are the OMG version but we could play a game with them. (Well it might turn out that someone uploaded a model that was lost from SharePoint and we need a substitute.) I am in the process of taking each model and applying scale and standard orientation. Then they will be loaded into an organized set of folders per the shiplist. Once that is done we will be game ready.

In addition to the credit files with models I have a list on file.

The minor races are about 90 per cent done and I will do them last.

Without SharePoint I will load those png images into my Photobucket and link to a new thread here. That can not happen until I get them sorted out.

Once SharePoint or its replacement is available others can reload their models from backup. I will maintain my own backup of that online data base.

The list of ships will never be done in that better models can always be built. The first release of 3D combat will not be the end of model work though I might then move on to more pressing tasks in the games development.

The Ferengi outpost was added simply because we had the model for it. As you know, I haven't maintained this list in a long while so I simply forgot about it. We're going to need to discuss which races get outposts. The Ferengi are an obvious choice for getting one anyway. We can call it a "Trade Station" or some such bumph.

As for Colony ships...i'll go through the list. That's a glaring omission that I should've sorted out ages ago. :ahem:

*Edit - I've given Colony ships to the races that need them. I based the number of colony ships on the expansion ratio of the race - so some races get as many as three ships. I hope that's not too many to ask...

Yeah, we can just reuse the models, except maybe for the really important races like the Vulcans. The semi-important races will have to make do with new textures or the same model.

Thanks for updating the list. Now was the time to do it.

It is interesting that the Klingon and Dominion get two grades of colony ship while several of the minor races get three.

For version one of the game's models minor race colony ships will just scale up and repaint from earlier models. Make that about 70 per cent done on the minor races ships. :borg:

The difference means the Klingons and Dominion get their most advanced colony ships faster than the other races, and they are a vast improvement over the previous design. The other races have more ships, but these designs are incremental improvements instead of the major leap in tech that the Klingons and Dominon ships represent. This means the Klingons and Dominion have a mid-game colonisation advantage, while the other races have an end-game colonisation advantage.

The underside looks plain because it is plain, Trashman. I can't see any hull panelling detail etc, just solid grey. If it is there, you might want to darken the lines or something.

I'll have to re-do the underside of the Sabre...apparntly, the images I have been using for reference weren't really canon.
The deflector underside is V shaped, so I?ll re-do that. The rest seems OK tough.

It has been a long...long...long long...time lol.
I'm offering up some of the stuff i've done lately if anything is needed.
I'm actually currently working on a Daedalus for you guys and planning on doing a new constitution with some of the stuff i've learned over the past couple of years.

That is, if this is what you need.
I'll begin with Vanialla Federation ships...
Grab some coffee, perhaps something to eat, it's going to be a while.

Pathfinder Class: The Galaxy class of the Daedalus (Pre-TOS era).
Although this vessel is not a very dominant battleship like the Galaxy class would be in TNG being armed with simple missiles.
Although it had some advanced phasers.

Lastly, one of the longest, best projects i've done in recent memory, the Ticonderoga class from FASA!
This ship is essentially a Light Cruiser - Cruiser. It's armed with the usual TMP phasers and an older style TMP photon launcher.
It's a pretty big ship actually, quite an unusual design I took a liking to.
