No, it hasn't. I keep forgetting about that one. I'll try to get it fixed this weekend.

There is still a bug with the research. On level 7 I should get the Frigate II and on level 8 the Explorer II and the Heavy Cruiser II, but I can't build any of these ships. (I'm on level 8 in each research sections now.)

Supplement: I just realized that the same happens with the colony ship. Now I can't build any colony ship. :(

I believe there is a glitch in the implementation of the ship upgrades that is causing that, mika. I don't believe that it is a specific bug. I might be wrong of course, as i've made some considerable changes to my own copy of the game. Unfortunately I haven't got an unmodded copy of the data files. I'll have to redownload Supremacy so I can get a copy for comparison.

...

Mike, have you finished looking at my data files yet? I haven't made any updates in the editor for almost two weeks now...

Haha. Thanks for remembering me, MOE. It's good to be remembered. :)

I remember you too, SeaBee :). It's good to see you back here again.

@mika/matress: There was a regression bug in a recent release that prevented some advanced ships (type II, III, etc) from showing up in the shipbuilding list even when the research requirements had been met. This has since been fixed, so if you have the latest update, you should be able to build those ships.

@matress: As far as I can tell, all issues related to upgrades should be resolved in the next update. If you make the changes I listed in my previous post, your game data should be fine. I haven't actually reviewed it, but if everything works as it should in the game, then it's probably fine.

@mstrobel: Thanks, I think my problem was I had an old savegame. I'll try starting a new game. :)

Another question:
Why do the major races home system have such a small max population? It seems the normal value for systems is between 0 and 500, so 300 would be fair.

Especially regarding the huge amount of energy, which is needed to activate all buildings. Currently, there is no way to activate all of them in the Sol System at tech level 4 or higher. Is there a specific reason for this?

The numbers for the energy requirements are set in dafedzs database but these requirements have not been balanced yet. The numbers are pretty similar to botf, but there are a lot more buildings than there used to be so the total required energy works out as being much higher. We'll probably need to bump up the energy levels a bit to compensate but that won't be til all the buildings are in the game - which they should be once my update is done. :)

Until then, you can bump up the energy levels of the buildings yourself in the editor. Look for 'Supremacyeditor2.exe' in your Supremacy folder. The energy structures are listed under the facilities tab not the structures tab.

The max population is not explicitly set--it is a computed value based on the size and relative hospitality of the planets in the system.

Would it be possible to 'add' population to certain preset systems Mike? I don't know if that is programmable, but giving the Empires homesystems a boost would be useful. There are a few minor races that such a system would be useful for as well; some of them suffer from massive overpopulation or would be able to become more of a threat to the Empires in the game if they had larger populations.

Alternatively perhaps slightly bumping up the populations of all planets by 5-10% would be easier to program?

A third way of adjusting the populations is also mentioned in Dafedz's database:

Quote:
6). Population: This is the default starting population of the race's home planet. I would imagine the growth factors would only really kick in once you (or any other empire) has established contact with the race. The terms below basically describe the population levels on the planet's surface. Maybe it would be possible to incorporate these values into the technology development. A higher population, more densely populated, can develop and organise more quickly and thus progress at a faster rate etc...

Sparse (maybe fewer than 10 million)
Scattered (maybe 50 million +)
Abundant (maybe 250 million +)
Dense (maybe 1 billion +)
Teeming (maybe 5 billion +)

These levels would differ and adhere in relation to the planet's size.

If populations could be adjusted based on their housing preferences, that would add another dimension to how population is determined. Teeming and dense could then be reserved for special races and the Empires then, and you wouldn't need to program special cases either.

@Matress: I suppose a "Population Density" multiplier could be added. We could then multiply the base max population by that factor to get the effective max population. That wouldn't require changing any existing values.

I'm not sold on the idea yet, though. I'll have to give it some thought.

MStrobel mentioned in a previous post that there had been an update by microsoft for the service pack Beta 3.5 etc and that this had given rise to a conflict.

If you have just recently downloaded the game, i.e today and the updated service pack then this may be the cause of the error.

I believe he is looking into it ASAP.

Regards Wolfe

Huh-wha? What language is that? 8O

Microsoft broke compatibility between .NET 3.5 and the .NET 3.5 SP1 Beta, but then fixed compatibility between .NET 3.5 and the .NET 3.5 SP1 RTM. Unfortunately, this means that compatibility between the Beta and RTM are is broken, so everyone who installs the RTM will have problems until I post a new update. Once that happens, everyone who had the Beta installed will need to remove it and install the RTM (or the game will crash). Whoopty-friggin-doo. My apologies, guys, I'm as annoyed as you are.

I'm installing the SP1 RTM on my machine right now, and I might be able to get a new update out later tonight.

I would just like to say thanks for always being on top of errors and bugs, along with your quick response time to questions, and your generally sunny disposition MStrobel :bigthumb: :bigthumb: . I also find the update/compatability issue you just described absolutely hilarious in a very twisted its so horrible its funny kind of way, but of course I am not the one fixing the problem so maybe that just me :D.

Hey All,
Just joined today and downloaded the game. It was working ok, had two updates but got this error page come up and stops me from playing

Is this related to the update of the .Net Framework 3.5 SPL update? If so, has a new update been sorted because I want to play being a fan of the original BOTF :)

Many thanks for any help

Davec8r, I just spoke to Mike and he says that you're missing a file called System.Threading.dll; this file is included in the download though so something must've gone wrong with the download or when you unzipped it.

Try deleting your Supremacy folder and unzip it again. If you haven't got the file anymore, you're going to need to redownload it i'm afraid.

Done it and it's working now! Thank you!

Correction:
It works fine until I download the update, despite the System.Threading.dll file being there :S

I tried it again (deleting and unzipping). Now I get this:
