Yeah, but despite the huge advances in technology, the reason that the bar codes are the same size is because of inflation. That magazine probably costs an equivalent of about 729,514.93 USD (and the US penny would still be minted for some asinine reason). Thus, the bar code still has to be a relatively good size.
