System crash during update - Now what?

My game was performing the May-update, and then my computer crashed, rebooted, and the game was pretty much dead. So I performed a clean install, taking care to remove the files in the appdata directory beforehand. Now, the game won't update, the update button is absent, and I can't for the life of me imagine what to do next. I tried re-downloading the original game-zip, but it's still the 20080902 version, and I have given the game full access through the firewall, even turned on the upnp function on the router just to be on the safe side. Still, no dice.
What can I do?

Specifically, clear your %TEMP%\UAB folder.

Ok, did that, and now the game does indeed tell me there is an update available. And has been preparing the download for about twenty minutes, which seems long. Is there so much traffic on the server that it isn't available, or am I forgetting something else?

The same thing has happened to me, so i'm downloading the old copy of the game and will update from that (Since i've got all of the database update files which might be messign up the download). Just leave Supremacy running for a bit long. If it still hasn't started doing anything, try redownloading the game as i'm doing. I've just asked Mike to update the download link so if he does that you might be able to pick up the full, updated copy of the game in one go. :)

Not sure why it's taking so long during the preparation stage. I'll check into it.

The update is done, so I'm trying to set up a game, but no matter what options I choose; races, sizes, types, etcetera, the game freezes on the loading screen. There's no error log, and the regular log only states that the different races have been put in place. I don't know if this is related or not, but it still makes playing somewhat difficult...

I have no idea why this is happening for you guys - the game loads fine for me. I've sent Mike a PM so he knows about your unfortunate plight.

The game runs fine as a clean download without the update, so is there perhaps something that is missing from this update that was included in the christmas version, so that only people who have downloaded both updates can launch the game?

I always test a new update against the current full version download (currently September 2008), so it shouldn't require the Christmas update. Are you guys running any software firewalls, like Windows Firewall? If so, can you try disabling it temporarily to see if that solves the problem? Thanks!

Gave it a go, but the game still gets stuck on loading; I kept it running for 15 minutes while both the firewall of my av and router were turned off.

And Windows Firewall is also disabled?

Do you have ClientLog.txt or Log.txt files in your Supremacy folder? If so, can you post them?

Windows firewall has been disabled ever since I started having a dispute with it, so yes.
The clientlog file is empty, so I just put in the regular log. Perhaps o/t, but the error.txt is also empty, I suppose because the game doesn't actually crash.

Out of curiosity, after waiting at the loading screen for several seconds, are you able to switch to any of the screens using the F2-F5 keys or bring up the right-click menu?

Nope, I keep getting that annoying Vista loading cursor. No response on the right-click or F-buttons.

Can you reproduce this problem when you set 'minor races' to 'none'?

Yes, I tried every option, for everything, none of them were able to actually start the game.

Sorry, i´ve tried the 'minor races' to 'none' as suggested, but doesn´t work too. Even lowering every option to minimize the resources of the computer, but nothing happens. Even though, when i press ctrl+alt+supr, i can see the process SupremacyClient.exe at 144.956 kb still running.
I´ve got the clientlog.txt and log.txt empty.

Please don´t give up on us

Live long...

Ok, are you guys using single or dual core CPUs, and what kind of video cards? Are your systems configured for U.S. English or another language?

Interesting. Punkster, is your laptop's region set to U.S. English, G.B. English, or another variant?

Hi @all... i just downloaded SupremacyTest_20080902.zip Version (.Net Framework 3.5 with SP1 already installed).

I started the game and played some single player rounds - wow what a great game.
(yet no combat and it seems like no AI)

Then i updated the game using the ingame updater - getting two further updates.
(no updating problems - all seemed to be right - game restarted itself two times)

After the last update i was not abled to load the saved game what is ok for me. I wanted to start a new single player game to test the latest update. The game begins "loading". After about 15 minutes the game is "loading". I ended the game using the task manager and tried it another time. (minimum galaxy size, no other races...)
The game loaded for about 45 minutes until i ended it using the task manager.
What can i do about it? I want to test the latest release to give feedback.

I use Windows XP with SP3!

Additional i can say that exactly the same happened on my 2nd pc - windows vista SP1 - the originally downloaded game runs fine and after the update it does not load...

Both systems are running fully german. Vista is a Intel Core2Duo with ATI graphics - XP is a single core notebook (Intel) with ATI graphics.

Graphics drivers are build about january 2009.

May i send you any files out of the game (tracelogs if there are some)?
May i assist you in hunting this failure?

My ClientLog.txt and Error.txt are empty. I am just deinstalling and reinstalling .Net Framework.
I cleared my Log.txt and planning to start the game after reinstalling .Net...
I'll post if my tries lead to a good end.

Are you shortly abled to implement a simple tracelog in the "loading"-procedure. Just logging checkpoint1, checkpoint2, ... checkpointX into a Textfile bootup log to see when and how the error occurs?

Many greetings from germany to all trek fans in the world wide web.
Markus
