Hey BIGchikin, welcome to the forums! :)

I don't know what might be wrong with your copy of the game. Have you tried reloading it? Is it a recurring problem? Have you tried redownloading the game?

Try doing that, and see if it happens again.

...

It sounds like you've got a corrupted download, admiral. I just performed an update, and the buildings are all there for me. Sorry mate, but I think you might need to download the game again too. :(

I've downloaded the zip file multiple times, extracted the files many times and still get the same error. It worked fine before this update. I've downloaded the game 5 times now.

Ok, i'll PM Mike and see what he says. He released an update last night fixed a few problems, so we're definitely getting closer to squashing all of these bugs. :)

Could you do something for us though? Open your Supremacy folder and look for these files: "ClientLog.txt", "Error.txt", "Log.txt", and "UpdaterLog.txt". If any of these files have information written in them, (They will have a file size bigger than 0 if they do) could you please attach them to a post for Mike to have a look. These files might contain a clue to the cause of your problem. The attach box is underneath the box where you type posts, just scroll down the page a bit to see it.

The other two were 0 in size or didn't even exist

I too have DLed it multiple times, from both main site and mirror. The update takes forever and a day and then when complete, Game has Stopped working. Running it causes the same thing.

Guys, try doing a fresh unzip of the current version, replacing your "HttpDownloader.dll" with this one, clearing your "%TEMP%\UAB" folder, and download the latest update.

Noticed the new mini update, so started to run the application client, waited a few minutes for the update to be read, started downloading it and got the download complete message and the game restarted. Looking at the version number, its still the same and I then get the new update found message, it then goes on to download and "install" although it doesn't. I've gone through this loop a couple of times, any ideas what could be causing this?

I am getting the same thing. Everytime i go in, i have to download 21 files of 8.6 MB. When i exit and reenter, it was like i never updated it, and it starts the updating process again. Again, it is 21 files which add up to 8.6 MB.

Same thing as Hawk:

Error.txt is empty, ClientLog.txt doesn't exist. Here are the other two:

BIGchikin, the HttpDownloader.dll file needs to go in your main Supremacy folder. Download the file straight into the folder, and it will ask you whether to overwrite the existing version of the file. Say yes.

To open your UAB folder, click on Start => Run, then type "%temp%/UAB" (Without the quote marks) into the box that appears and press enter. The UAB folder will then open. If there are any files or folders inside the UAB fodler, delete them all, then restart the game and hope for the best. If it works, let it download any updates it finds. That *should* be the last time it needs to do it.

Hey guys.

After downloading the recent update, i could no longer get into supremacy at all. Came up with an error.txt message or something like that.

I re-downloaded the whole lot, and it updated everything completely (about 595 files it said). But now when i try and play it, it comes up with "SupremacyClient has stopped working".

I've deleted all the files, downloaded it all again, extracted all the files, opened the game, allowed it to download the updates and it did the same thing again...the game starts in its basic original form (with the federation symbol instead of the tree or the rabbit). But after all the update files, it just won't open.

I went in to the %TEMP%\UAB file and got rid of two things that were in the uab folder, i think it was a downloader and something else, but that still made no differance...

I've pretty much tried everything that i can and know, which isn't a lot :? so, i dont know lol

I'm on Vista, hence the stupid ".....has stopped working and must close down"

LOL, no one is really mooching :), taking the time to make a simple post, even if it is just an error is of great benefit.

Yep that did it... I cleared out the UAB, and then replaced with that DLL and it now i can play supremacy again :)

Well done, and thanks!

I've asked Mike to release a full version of the current release, but he's been reluctant to do so until now. He said he'd do it, but he hasn't done so yet. I guess people will just have to wait.

Hello!

I've recently stumbled upon Star Trek Supremacy and, what can I say, incredible job guys!! Never thought someone actually took the time to make a sequel to BOTF, which was and still is an excellent game. And I didnt think it would be in this stage, which is pretty damn good. I haven't explored all of Supremacy yet, but I'd like to make some observations(also note that I haven't read all the replies in this thread so I dont know if other people suggested this before me):

1. Green stars do not exist in reality. And I dont remember any green stars being in the Star Trek universe (I might be wrong though).

2. Star spectrum and classification

It would be really cool if you could extend the star spectrum to real ones - without getting into too much scientific info. For example, lose the current classification of red, white, yellow, green and blue and change it into the 7 main harvard spectral classification stars:

Class M - red
Class K - orange
Class G - yellow
Class F - yellow-white
Class A - white
Class B - blue-white
Class O - blue

Sure this might confuse the player, when he checks a terran planet and sees Class M planet, then when hovering a red star he sees Class M star. Although if this information is shown when hovering, it might not be that confusing(meaning that it says "planet" on the planet and "star" on the star ofc). Or you could only use the color classification.
You can also go further and expand the classification using the Yerkes spectral classification (which classifies stars by luminosity - supergiant, bright giant, normal giant, subgiant, main sequence star(dwarf), subdwarfs, white dwarfs).

Also speaking of white dwarfs, there are more than those 7 harvard spectral classes:
W - wolf rayet type star
L-type dwarfs
T - methane dwarfs
Y-type dwarfs
C - carbon stars
S-type star
D - white dwarf

If you want to discuss more about this, regarding stellar classification, the amount of x-type stars in the galaxy, percentages etc, please feel free to send me and email. I've researched this for some time now - made a map of the Milky Way Galaxy - http://www.3dgalaxymap.com/

Also it would be pro if you could add double or even multiple stars in one system; Alpha Centauri is a binary star; also there are a few ternary star systems in our galactic neighbourhood so it's not science fiction. Castor for example is a 6-star system. You can also check this website http://www.extrasolar.net/ - and look for double/triple star systems in the list. The panel reminds me of BOTF, and ofc supremacy now :)

3. Planet Classification

Keep the Star Trek planet classification (Class M - terran, J-barren, etc). But also add Hot Jupiter, Hot Neptune to the Gas Giants.
Pulsar Planets - would be cool - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulsar_planet
Dwarf planets - maybe not that important, just an idea
Make the Sol System accurate - i saw Mercury had moons, and Earth had more than 1 moon

4. Asteroid Belts and Debris Disks

I saw you added Asteroid belts - great job - that could provide a bonus to raw materials for example
I'd also suggest to add Debris Disks or Dust Disks such as the Kuiper Belt, some have been detected in systems like Epsilon Eridani, Tau Ceti, etc - also could provide a bonus to raw materials or something

5. Make nebulae occupy more than 1 sector - the same nebula I mean

6. in the summary window (after a turn is completed), double clicking on news(like starvation in X system) - will take you directly to that system

7. It would be reeeeeeeaaaaaallllly cool if you could add a "Star Trek original" mode checkbox when starting a new game. This will allow the user to play a map similar to the Star Trek universe, not a generated one - or at least a few generated star systems. Could be based on maps like:
http://www.sttff.net/images/AST_MAP0012.jpg
http://sims.sb254.com/endevour/images/map.jpg
http://www.ucip.org/science/newmaps/romulan.jpg

With predefined system positions of every major and minor race. This would take a lot of work though :(

Anyway, if I find anything else I'll post it here.
Really really great job with supremacy, it's like a dream come true!

Hey Rayden, welcome to the forums! :)

1. You're not the first person to mention this. The star images used to be simple animated .gif's, but Mike changed this in the May update, so i'm not entirely sure how they work now. I imagine they're still moddable though. Let's just call the green stars artistic licence for the time being. :P

2. As above, they *might* be moddable, so it's not impossible that the redesigned star colours could be included...

As you said though, people might get confused if we include class names on the stars as well. Many people would think it was a bug, so I doubt that bit would get included.

And as for Binary/Trinary systems, that's highly unliklely to be possible simply because of programming and user interface constraints; one sector, one star. But that doens't mean it's impossible. As with any feature, the chances of it being included greatly increase if enough people want it in the game. You'll need to discuss this with Mike, aka Mstrobel, the developer of the game if you want more info and to suggest it to him.

3. I believe the planet types are hard-coded into the game; any additions would need to be physically coded into the game, so it's not something I could do myself. The planets all have multiple textures each though, so even the gas giants don't all look the same. I think each planet has three separate textures, modified by a coloured filter that is overlaid on the texture to look like an atmosphere. I don't think this is a limitation though; as long as the files are correctly named, additional textures can be added to the game and it will randomly use them during galaxy cration as it does with the existing textures.

The Moons cannot be changed though due to programming constraints. The number of Moons is completely random as you noticed - not even Earth can have a predefined number of Moons. Every game has a randomised number and size of Moons.

4. Asteroid Belts are *supposed* to provide a raw materials bonus, and some structures that provide raw materials actually have Asteroid Belts as a building prerequisite. The entire raw materials system is in dire need of an overhaul though, so expect changes in future updates.

As for Kuiper belts etc, that's the exact same thing as adding in extra planets. It's a matter of programming rather than modding. Ask Mike if you really want this.

5. We *do* want this, and have in fact suggested it to Mike many times already. I think hes for adding it to the game, but it's a question of whether it is actually possible.

6. Err...are you asking for this or are you saying it's buggy? If it isn't working like this, I believe it is already on Mikes to-do list, but so are a million other things.

7. We *do* plan to include predefined maps in the future; in fact, people have already made some examples of canonish maps using excel. Mike plans to make mjor changes to the editor in the future, in fact he is working on version 3 of the editor at the moment, so we're hoping he will include a map editor of some kind in there. Whether he will actually include that feature in the new version of the editor or whether that will be in a future version or a separate program though I don't know. If you want a look, here's two examples of the canonish maps that users have already submitted on the forums:

I saw some pics of the old stars (only yellow ones) and they looked better. The new ones are missing the glow and I think the sun spots(the darker areas) are a bit too large.

The background image of the map was a bit confusing at the beginning. I kept thinking the background stars were part of the actual map.

6. That was just some minor suggestion, doesn't really matter that much.

Regarding the gas giants, I wanted to say to add 2 more categories of gas giants, same parameters, different name, but chosen based on location when generated (meaning first planet from the star). For example a Hot Jupiter is a gas giant that usually orbits close or very close to the star. Its usual texture color may vary from yellow to red (bright). I dont know about the limitations of modding though.

What programming language is used to make Supremacy? I know Java and C++ pretty well (also C#, VBscript, Assembler, and some others).
I'm a programmer so if you need any help with coding this stuff let me know.

The lack of glows is due to the way the images are drawn. They haven't actually changed, but they look like they have. I mentioned this to Mike whilst I was testing the beta versions of the May update that he sent me (There were three betas) and I mentioned this change all three times. It's better than it was in the first beta, but I still prefer the look of the original plain .gif images. But this change was necessary because the gif images were causing sporadic problems for people and were requiring a surprisingly large amount of processing power to animate. With any luck though, he can tweak the system further and make them look brighter.

If anyone is reading this and hasn't noticed the problem or hasn't seen the game befor ethe May update, this is an animation I made for Mike to illustrate the problem:

Image

The background image is another problem that has been mentioned a lot as well. Mike is currently looking for a replacement image, but for the time being he toned down the brightness of the image. He's said that he'll look at including an option to turn the background off as well.

6. I'm not 100% sure how the game generates systems, but I do know it is set to have a higher likelihood of rocky planets being in the first five planetary positions, with the rest being more likely to have Asteroid Belts and Gas Giants. Whether more preferences can be programmed in (To create planetary zones) though I don't know.

As for the programming language, you're gonna have to go straight to the source and ask Mike. Programming is all Greek to me. :P

If you want to get your hands dirty and help though, definitely PM him. Mike is always looking for people to help, and with the rate that people make feature requests, he's never going to finish the game. :P

the background image can be easily made in photoshop with let's say

- one layer of distant stars (nothing too big or bright just background stuff)
- one layer of blue rendered clouds
- one layer of red rendered clouds

The opacity can be toned down for the clouds for a better view, so it wont bother the player. Also layer masks can be added for these 2 layers.

Something like the screenshot I uploaded.

Could you provide the required image size and format?

Ooh thanks for the image, Rayden. I'll let Mike know you're having a go at making one for us. As a suggestion though, i'd ask if the stars were a tad more visible/there was a tad less nebula though, as I can barely see the stars without putting my nose the the screen. You've gone a little too much in the other direction, and space isn't full of just nebulae. :P

The required image format is .png, which you're luckily already using. We use .png as the standard for all images for quality reasons, .jpg's just compress the image too much. The image size needs to be 1920x1200 pixels or greater. It's this large so that the image looks high quality even on giant or widescreen displays. Images that are too small will be stretched to fit, but this causes them to lose quality. The more it stretches, the more quality that is lost. So the bigger the starting image, the better.

Name the final file Defult.png, and if you want to test it out in the game, place it in your Supremacy/Resources/Images/Backgrounds folder. I would suggest that you keep a backup of the original image instead of overwriting it with your own though, because if you keep your new image the auto-updater will attempt to overwrite the new image with the original every time you play. You'll either have to use the original image, stop the auto-update in the optons menu, or wait for Mike to replace the background image on the update server to stop it from displaying the update message.
