The first 2 episodes of Stargate Universe aired the other day in the States. Has anyone already seen it? What do you think?

The first 2~3 seconds of the music of the intro were suspiciously similar to TNG :shifty:

Due to a subspace distortion and the influence of an alien intelligence, some data about the pilot (2 episodes) were streamed and uploaded to my computer database, so I might have a look at it later today

Odd, the same aliens must've accessed my computer too, because the whole thing is sitting on my desktop. I guess i'll have to meet their demands and watch it...obviously i'll be watching it completely against my will though, since I didn't download it... :shifty:

For those of you from the UK that are reading this, both episodes are officially airing on Sky One this Tuesday at 8pm, with a behind-the-scenes documentary straight after it on the same side.

I can't get Sky One...

Damn these aliens... They must be planning world domination

Seriously now, I just watched the pilot and it looks great  I think it's much better than Atlantis...

Sigh... I wish there was a new ST series too. Watching the old ones is still fun but there's no more excitement as I know every line, in every scene, in every episode :waaah: :waaah: :waaah:

PS And yes my social life is dead... :brickwall:

I just complied with the aliens request... :borg:

Oh my god i'm glad that I did. It was brilliant. It was Atlantis but better. It was like a film but better. You can see how the special effects have moved on even from Atlantis, the music was just perfect - even with the TNG intro - and it was nice to see even background characters taking up their old roles. Destiny is an amazing model, and the intro sequence just gave me goosebumps. It was like seeing The first Star Wars film sequence for the first time all over again.

I admit that I had some reservations about Robert Carlyle being one of the main characters, mainly because i'm not fussed on him as an actor, but he did a good job. I think I recognised a few other people in there as well. I'm not very good with names though...

Matress recommends Universe to all, because even if you've never watched Stargate, you're gonna love it.

Keep in mind, if you're impatient or missed the premier, you can watch the full episode at . It is US only, but there are ways around that, you just have to look around.

I especially liked the part where the cast is looking at a starchart and they realize they are a looooong way from home ("billions of lightyears"). It also reminds me a bit of Voyager :mischief:

Skeeter said the exact same thing to me on MSN last night.

But he also thought they said millions of lightyears, not billions. I put him straight about that mistake.

A few millions of lightyears is just beyond M31, aka Andromeda!!!! In the episode, the characters zoomed out and you could see dozens and dozens of galaxies :vulcan:

Anyway, I can only get this feeling by Celestia... The newest version is AWESOME :romulan:

I thought the comment about the ancient race having undergone ascension was odd. The Dr. Professor type said they became pure energy and moved into the cosmos. If you became pure energy, like turning into light, time would stop. Remember what Einstein said. Time slows down as you speed up. Go to pure energy and you could get stuck in the cosmic fly paper.

So perhaps they exist outside of time as well. We know it's possible, it happened in Trek. :mischief:

Hi Kenneth,
Becoming pure energy does not mean becoming light! In Relativity there are three kinds of particles: 1) lightlike, 2) tachyons and 3) timelike (moving at sublight speeds). Pure energy can be anyone of the three :winkthumb:

The basic criterion for this classification is mass, eg mass=0 is category (1), positive mass is (3) and imaginary mass is (2).

Also, relativity doesn't say that time stops as you approach the speed of light. What it says is that each observer has his own time. So, for some observers time might seem that it stands still. The same happens with an observer falling into a black hole. He would need finite time to pass the horizon (point of no return) but for an observer far far away this time would be infinite

Cheers

wow i thought i was the king of going off topic.....

Right SGU is pretty much a mix of voyager battlestar tbh.

Millions of years from home. and a big mix of civilions/air force/scientists.

so yea its a mix of them two and it would be mint but i FOOOOking hate this stupid lets film it from angles that a 5 year old who just found out his phone can record would do it.... i mean come on ffs yea they trying to make it look gritty but it just annoys the hell out of me tbh.......

but yea it could have a good run but i be very honest and say that if it was between SGU and some more seasons of atlantis..... bring back atlantis...... it was starting to get good again. Im looking forward to the new atlantis film when they eventualy start filming it... and yes thier only going to be one at the moment they said two... but they ment one atlantis film and one sg1... why they still making sg1 ones i have no idea... without jack its not going to work.....

end rant..

but yea... SGU is OK and OK is all it rely deserves .... nothing ground breaking just a mix of good sc-fi and i be honest....

Just finished Episode 4, the first non-pilot episode. I thought they're starting out well; the crew of the Destiny just can't catch a break. As of yet, I feel the show is better than Atlantis, though I won't know for sure until we start encountering aliens or have a non-survival episode.

I submitted to this weird alien influence and watched the 4th episode as well. I have to admit, Stargate Universe seems to be better than I thought it would be! It is too early to tell, but I think that it's also just better than SG1 :bigthumb:

PS To set the record straight, it's really good but it's not Trek ... :borg: :klingon: :romulan: :vulcan:

I totally agree with Captain_Billy_Bacon, I've got as far as the episode with the dust aliens depleting their water.

So far SGU greatly disappoints. It is a clumsy declaration, in my opinion, that they no longer have any useful or original ideas, so decide to surgically graft a dark vision of Voyager on to a feeble (bordering on plagiaristic) imitation of Battlestar Galactica, complete with shameful rip-offs of their innovative snap-zooms/hand-held camera angles.

To me personally, who loves all things sci-fi, and followed the Stargate franchise avidly, I find it remarkable that this show is so dull, with hardly one engaging personality among the entire cast. So many elements are irritatingly and blatantly copied from the brilliant BSG, even the colonel/leader, who seems to have been lifted straight from Adama's character biography sheet: the old man alpha male, gruff, stern, mysterious, limping with his cane etc.

And Carlyle? Thought he would at least add some strength, some quality, but he has thus far portrayed nothing more insightful than one-dimensional angst and anger at just about everything that's going on in the show. There's no real sign of a 'hook' that makes one engage with his or any other character.

If they wanted inspiration for a doctor/scientist type character with a rough edge, or just a cool spin, then they may as well have just done another Rodney, or copied the Doc from Voyager. They copied everything else.

I can see cancellation written all over it. Why oh why they couldn't have ploughed their resources and finances into continuing Atlantis I'll never know. That had fascinating characters you actually gave a rat's ass about. It had a storyline you wanted to follow and learn more about. Universe... nah, been there, seen that.

I will continue to watch though, hoping that it might actually deliver something approximating original, interesting, or worthwhile substance.

I won't be able to watch it until at least next Sunday. I'm moving into my new flat today, and it'll take at least 10 days to sort the phone line and internet. The previous tenants didn't have a landline. :gripe: :brickwall:

I just watched the new episode. It was quite good but there is much room for improvement in the series. I read the synopses from wikipedia and I believe the series will definitely improve

New episode below; initial thoughts in spoilers below. Keep in mind they are from my perspective, and I am not a professional reviewer.

Also, no SGU next week, I'm guessing they're taking off for Thanksgiving. Next episode airs on the 4th/

I'm afraid I have to agree with your review Nemitor. For the time being there is just too much character development. This is supposed to be military sci-fi damn it, ie more shooting less talking :klingon: :klingon: :klingon:

Spoilers for the next episodes below:

I still haven't seen the time-travel ep thanks to my internet-less flat. But i'm gonna have an SGU splurge soon as I can.

If they're focussing on character development though, maybe they're doing it coz they're going to have a big killfest later on. It'll be all that cooler if we "care" for the characters.

I completely agree with the above review. Waaay too much character development.I mean we all got to know the characters of SG1 over time but they had an awesome action packed show every time.

Doubt they have a kill fest though, look at the army of fans that demanded Dr Beckett to br brought back from the dead!

I hate most TV series with a "lost in space" theme. I just don't see the point. You more or less know the outcome of each episode before it even starts: at least half of the episode plots will involve some attempt to get home, and you know ahead of time that they will fail. They can't make it home until the end of the series, as that pretty much kills the show's premise. And with a few rare exceptions, you know none of the main characters are going to die. This is basically Stargate: Voyager.

I don't place BSG in this category, though. BSG's had more of a post-apocalyptic survival theme than a "lost in space" theme, and it was dark and dramatic enough that you never really knew for sure what was going to happen.

I agree, and there are many elements of BSG that the makers of Universe are trying to duplicate, and they're doing a piss poor job of it. Very disappointed in this remarkably uncompelling show so far. Bring back Atlantis!

I heard there are plans to do 2-hours one-off Atlantis films dunno if it's true but we can hope, although that would be a bit difficult to do seeing as how the series ended...

Wow. Missed there was a SGU thread here. I couldn't agree more with the general assessment. All the sordid details of people's lives is wearing thin. The balance is wrong. Some of this stuff is important but we don't need it all in the first 6 episodes. I miss Rodney McCay. "Well what does he mean 'and then what', and then we don't die horribly?" Atlantis had that campy ensemble cast humor + loyalty + science that is so appealing in Star Trek. I love how they referenced Star Trek within it. All the "She was hot wasn't she - You're just like Captain Kirk" stuff was great. SGU is dragging. And I agree about BSG. The interest there was the mystery of who was Cylon and not. Once we knew that, we were wondering what Starbuck was. There was also the dangling question as to whether the Cylons would remain loyal to their human friends. BTW that scene when the Galactica dropped onto the atmosphere, launched vipers and FTL jumped out was one of the coolest special effects I have EVER seen. I watched it over and over. CB

I just watched the new episode (S01E10:"Justice"). HOLY COW!!! Be prepared for a HUGE surprise :bigthumb:

My (non-spoiler) comment is simple: pay extra attention during the last ~5 minutes...

I see what you mean. I guess Col. Young COULD make the "hard life or death decisions" after all. Without question the most interesting episode to date. I wonder what was meant by "the rest of the Keno video." Was he referring to some other part we didn't see, or the part that shows how the guy died?
