It would be nice to have an eye popping graphic banner to place on our booth in Vegas. I was looking here to place an order for a banner. The aspect ratio would be 2 high by 5 long. The link gives the image requirements. What would you like to see on the banner? Can anyone come up with a nice background high resolution image and lettering to say Star Trek Supremacy?

I would be willing to come up with something but someone else should also try to do it. We can then select the better one.

Just one question, what is a dpi?

Good work vjeko1701.

Thanks, I am busy with the Conestoga. After work on that I want to change gears in preparation for the August Vegas version of Supremacy. That means getting the .png images of ships in order. The models will not make that release but the png images likely will. All that weapons file and glow that reaches the boarder of the images needs to be cleaned up.

I set on that 2 x 5 ratio because I want it to be two by five feet. It will go on the booth in Vegas and then the front edge of a table at panel discussions. It will arrive in Vegas in my car, be used there and then go in Mike's luggage to Atlanta for Dragon*con. You work will have legs and get around.

It says that the image should be 72 dpi, what is that in pixels or cm.

Set your photoshop to 72 dpi. (dots per inch)

Calling DPI "resolution" is confusing. It is print output resolution and not the resolution of the image you are working on. Just set your photo shop to 72dpi and that way they can print it correctly. It has nothing to do with the pixels per cm or inch that is our image quality.

DPI = dots per inch. 72dpi is the standard for most computerized graphics, but it's a very low resolution for printed text (which is usually 300, 600, or 1200dpi). It might be okay for a banner, though.

On a standard 96dpi computer monitor, an one inch is approximately 96 pixels in width or height, so every inch of a 72dpi banner's size would take up approximately 3/4 inch on your screen.

A 5ft-by-2ft banner (60 inches x 24 inches) would be 4320x1728 pixels at 72dpi. At 300dpi, the same banner would have a source image size of 18000x7200 pixels.

The reason they cite a resolution of "25% image with 300 dpi" is because the image's size when printed (in inches) will be roughly 25% of the size that it was when displayed on your monitor (in inches). It's actually closer to 32%--their math is bad. A 300dpi image for a 60x24-inch banner would be approximately 187.5x75 inches on a 96dpi screen.

Anyway, 72dpi ought to be fine.

Good work vjeko1701

I am thinking that the images we started with, without otherwise knowing the ppi, will not be high res enough to print past 72 dpi on that size of banner. We could go to 300 to be safe. It is to be seen across the room and not as text on a page in front of your face.

We could try going more over the top with the lens flair and intensity like this below. Matress has the font set used on Mike's download page for the lettering. We might be able to get an exact match there if you can load it into Photoshop. It will not load to Blender. Would it look better to have the race emblems with a little more detail in contrast to the ghost outline look?

Ok, send me the font you want to be on the banner. I will apply other modification.

72dpi is fine as long as you size it correctly. You can create a new Photoshop document with dimensions in inches instead of pixels (60in x 24in), using 72dpi. The resulting image should be 4320x1728 pixels. When printed on the banner, it will be exactly 5ft x 2ft (60in x 24in) because they will print it at 72dpi (72² little ink blots square inch). The quality won't be stellar when viewed up close, but from a few feet away (or from across the room) it should look fine.

If they can print more little dots at no extra charge should we build it that way?

In 2005 I see that the attendance was over 15,000 with people coming from all over the planet. We will have our hands full. This is no joy ride.

The only fonts I have are the ones that come with the game. So if you've got the game, then you have the fonts too. They're located in your Supremacy\Resources\Fonts folder.

Or below.

Well, a 5x2 foot banner at 300dpi would need a 18000x7200 pixel image. There's no way you'd be able to find any background images at that high a resolution, so unless vjeko feels like doing some really insane custom rendering, I'd say just go for 72dpi. His PC probably wouldn't be able to handle such a large Photoshop file anyway :).

The banner will actually upscale the 72dpi image and print it at 540x1080 dpi. The printed image will be the same size as if it were printed at 72dpi (5x2 feet), but it will fill in the additional "dots" by using a blending algorithm.

Above is what Matress said about the font. Were you able to get it?

Thanks for adding in that nice work Zeleni did no the race emblems. At least I like it better that way. I hope others do too. Here below is a lower res copy, so it fits the screen, of your new image. Below that I was playing with it a little. Added is more lens flair to the star. I am not sure that it helps or not. I did add more brightness and contrast to the Federation delta that fills in the "A" of supremacy. Is there something odd happening with a flair below the "A"? It looks wrinkled. I want to ask Mike about adding, in smaller lettering at the bottom, the line, "A game for your PC". It is a matter of philosophy. Do you want to peak their interest with just 'Star Trek Supremacy' and let them ask or do you want to spell more of it out that way.

The lens effect is better, but since it's still working version I still have everything in layers, I will add additional lens effect in the final version. About the fonts, which one do you want me to use? The current one is from Star Trek Enterprise.

Your work is really looking good.

We can ask Matress about what font it is. I am at work and this PC does not have the game files on it. Also the supremacy download site is blocked from here. The font I am thinking of, if I remember correctly, is used on the opening screen of the game and has a little more metallic look to it. Also the lens flair has cut the contrast a little too much on the lettering of Supremacy in my version. It would help to bring its contrast up a bit with the background before adding flair at the final render.

Is that wrinkle below Supremacy on a layer so it can be taken out or is it something else?

Would the emblems look better in a more pyramid configuration shape to match the general outline of the lettering, smaller on top?

4320x1728. Or just create a Photoshop document with dimensions of 60x24 inches @ 72dpi. Photoshop will use the DPI factor to figure out the necessary resolution in pixels (should be 4320x1728).

EDIT: Yes, those numbers are correct. I just verified w/ Photoshop.

On a side note (to everyone), could we please not use the .rar format in relation to this project? I prefer .7z if you're not going to use .zip.

You know, maybe we should do 150dpi or 300dpi. We may not be able to find a backdrop of that size, so we'll have to scale one up, but we can at least have crisper text. What do you think, vjeko, can you handle that?

Skeeter started all the compression of models on SharePoint as .rar so that is what I have continued to use. Should we convert all that to .7z?

No need to convert existing files, just use .zip or .7z in the future. .7z bets better compression.

I will try to do it. I'll probably have to make a new planet bigger that the current one.

To keep the 'Supremacy' letters from being overcome by the lens flair just increase the subtle black riming on them with brightness contrast or the like. You knew that already but this will save you from having to make that part of the planet darker. Do you think the lettering should be a little bigger or do we want to keep more of the background graphics?

Yeah, we'll almost certainly have to mail it in on DVD.
