These screens could be useful for some screens of the game. see the alien panels.

Supremacy's UI was created by Joel Bailey, with some later updates and input by Silvercliff. I've never spoken to Joel, so don't know this for definite, but apart from the Intel screen and some other bits and pieces, the Federation UI is pretty much complete, so I don't think any further references will be needed.

I don't know about the UI's for the other empires though. We had some Klingon UI concept images in the staff room a very, very long time ago, but there's been no word on development since. To my knowledge though, Mike is still in contact with Joel so I imagine he will be the one working on any future UI changes. Silvercliff hasn't been on the forums in a long while though.

in fact this is not the Federation (it's UI is good) that I mentioned but the Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians and the Dominion. In this link, there is a section named : Alien Panels

Actually, I designed most of the Federation UI myself, with Silvercliff having come up with the color scheme and a diplomacy screen mockup that I borrowed heavily from. Joel has done some great mockups for the Cardassian and Klingon themes, but I won't be implementing any other UI themes until much later on.

As for inspiration, it's probably better to start with general screen layouts based on function and then work on styling them later, as opposed to taking existing templates and trying to make them work for game screens.

Yeah. And stuff. I know a little bit about how complicated that will get. (Designing for symbolism over substance) And fast. << Joel Bailey

Hey Joel, glad to see you're still around :). You want to pack up all the mockups you've done into an archive for me? I still have them, but they're scattered across backup folders :).

Mike

Absolutely Mike. I was just messing around with them yesterday. I'll be on Messenger much more often too. (Have about 4 hours a night to myself now) Just checked my profile, and my e-mail address is still valid, so hit me up anytime.

None of the mock-ups were ever finished. (By the by) So, be gentle. But, here you go. Klingon, the original Cardassian and the "rework" Cardassian. Someone, (I forget whom) aptly pointed out that the original Cardie mock-up looked more "Romulan" than Cardassian, so I gave it another go, from scratch.

Simply, beautiful I love them all :bigthumb:

Though i have one suggestion for cardassian alternative mockup, imo green color should be replaced with more cardassian friendly color :winkthumb:

@Vjeko, we won't see new UI's until mike decides for sure which features will enter in the game.

Thank you, thank you. These were "early" mock-ups, and have been around for well over a year. Mike and I were bouncing ideas back and forth for the original Federation LCARS, which he fully designed and implemented, though Silvercliff and I (Silvercliff, mostly) contributed "ideas". At the time, the project was taking a back seat to both our lives, and I ended up shelving the designs. In the interim, I was designing a new UI for Space Empires V, and kicking around ideas for BOTE, before they shelved the Star Trek UI's altogether. So, I've only recently re-visited these mock-ups. As Mike stated earlier in the post, not to hi-jack the thread, implementing any new UI is probably a way off. These images represent early ideas, all of which Mike has had in his hot little hands for quite some time. If Mike ever wants me to proceed with UI design, of course, I'm at his disposal. That hasn't changed. The real goal here though, is, as was earlier mentioned, function first, eye candy later. Eye candy, however, I have aplenty.

Being a Romulan, I hate myself fr saying this, but i'm loving the Klingon UI. I remember the old mockups we had in the staffroom somewhere and I loved the Klingon one even then. This version follows the same colourscheme that those old mockups had, but in a lot more detail. It'll definitely be eye candy when they're implemented, even if it's years from now.

I must admit, I had the most fun with the Klingon UI. If I had to "be" anything, I would be a Klingon. I actually had so many ideas for the Klingon UI, that I ran out of space to play with, and Mike had told me that it wasn't necessary to follow a uniform design template for each race, so I lengthened it by 75 pixels to add more detail in the planetary detail area. But, being me... I wandered off because I began to become excited about messing with the new Romulan UI that I was working with and never finished that portion of the design element. But, I certainly do appreciate all of the positive feedback!

I like these graphics but be careful with the Klingon, Cardassian, Romulan & Dominion fonts. There will be a French language and others language for the translations and the French language requires this type of font: é è ê ù ô ... etc. . You should choose full fonts.

So I am back around :)

I am also working on a Romulan UI Design at the moment.

I have a very early mockup done now, and am starting to give it serious thought, and tune it.

Imagine what the Federation UI looks like, then forget it completely ;) It is VERY different.

So you're saying my random popping up on MSN has spurred you into action? I'll be doing that more frequently then.

Can't wait to see what you come up with mate, and for anyone that is reading this, he means what he says that the interface will be completely different - Mike confirmed to us on MSN that the interface elements do not have to be in identical places, so the interfaces truly can be unique.

It's probably not a good idea to be moving the elements around in different UIs. A game's UI should be designed for functionality, not "dazzlement". It's one of the most common complaints in games. After a few games, all you'll want from the game is intuitivity (if that's a word) and functionality.

My goal is to give the UI when playing Romulan, a Romulan feel. Everything will be there, just maybe not in the same places. I am taking functionality very seriously.

:) Ultimately if my design doesnt work very well, then Ill just skin the Federation UI, but first I am going to try and put a unique look, feel, and usage on the Romulan UI :)

I was only trying to say that having elements in different places requires the player to look for those elements when he switches empires, which may cause some discomfort for some people.
Sorry if I wasn't clear.

I think Iceman has a good point. In multiplayer mode BOTF 1 had a timer. Trying to adapt to a new placement when you play a different race can put you at a disadvantage. Humans are adaptable though and I suppose someone who plays the game a lot might get used to all the different placements. Bashir

*Some* humans are adaptable, yes  Some, however, do not *want* to bother being adaptable. They just move on to something that is intuitive. There's plenty of "offer" nowadays to cover demand. Like I said above, if you've been around game forums (4X and otherwise I'd venture) long enough, you know one of the most common complaints is the UI.
Not arguing here, just giving my opinion. TBH, IMO the BotF UI was horrid, to the point of being a game breaker. Maybe that's just me though. I do like Sup's Fed UI, and frankly I'm quite happy using it regardless of what empire I'm playing. It's clean, attractive, non-convoluted, easy on the eyes. Maybe there'll be an option to keep the same UI regardless of empire being played

One BOTF I UI element that I know Mike has now fixed was the task force assignment UI. In BOTF I it was AWFUL. I had to stop and think EVERY time I did it. Sometimes you had to go to the manual to remember just how it worked. I saw something on his programming site about implementing a "drag and drop" UI for that. Can't wait to see it and use it  And yes, Vjeko, I am excited to see what silvercliff comes up with. Anticipating Bashir
