1) SGU was a 2 season deal from the start or at least that's what this guy claims
2) Also, "advertisers buy based on just the 18-49 segment of these numbers". I would expect that they are interested in the total, not just some fraction of the people who watch a show. Don't the people that are 50+ or <18 have buying power? Surely they do but perhaps either not enough (a 10 year old does not have the $$$ to buy an iPad) or they don't care (say for an 80 old).
3) If you see the plot, they (the advertisers?) consider anything below 2 million viewers an unsustainable level! Then why was Californication (airs on Showtime) renewed for a fifth season, when the fourth scored on average 0.5 mil? Wasn't that unsustainable? You can see the stats here:
