Check how far they got before they were told to stop.

Oh and it might also be wise to get rid of the post from the coder asking for a warez version of one of the Visual Studio CD's as you know what microsoft are like and im sure he doesn't have two missle launchers ;o)

the difference between getting a stop letter and a company having the legal right to actually stop a fan based game is huge. i have no idea what game these guys were working on but i suspect it was still in development by whomever owned the rights to it, maybe they were doing a serial.
there was also no laws broken in what gavin asked for, he has already purchased a copy of it and had misplaced the auterization keys. if you legaly buy somethin you can legaly back it up.

The game in question was originally released for the snes over 12 years ago.

Viacom/Paramount (not microprose!) have a legal right. I suggest you look it up its called trademark infringement. If you take all the trademarked names out you will have the legal right to release it.

He did not misplace any keys. He asked for a copy of a CD then decided to tell everyone he spent ages downloading it off of a P2P network. Not really the actions of a legal owner are they.

It's nice you brought this up. But you can't have the developers turn around now. If Paramount decides it's time to stop this project, all trademarks could simply be taken out. And then... well, let them try to stop me and others from making a ST mod. They can't sue a "ghost" can they?

I was going to suggest they did exactly what you say so they cant be told to stop hosting it.

Right, but they can do that if/after the Paramount open hailing frequencies. No sense to throw away everything done till now...

Besides I doubt they'll do anything. There are a lot of other ST projects and noone does anything to them. Plus Jig is right, the project isn't doing them any harm.

I am the legal owner of a valid Visual Studio licence its just i lost my CD. Last time i checked you were allowed a copy for backup according to the microsoft licence. It just happened my backup was on p2p. I have the receipt for the software so they cant do jack, a backup is a backup werever it may be.

Do you think VB.net is going to be fast enough for the game?

Well you sort of implied it when you constantly refused to say what language your using. Also if you was going to program it in C++ it would make more sense to you VS6 not .Net

Anyway. Do you have anymore screenshots to show after 4 months of work?

I am not arrogant but I am curious as to why you need to use two compilers?

So is the game using OpenGL or DirectX?

lol..I dare you to answer some questions :oP

I just came back from holiday, and well i have plenty to show for my work have you..?

I thought this forum was dedicated to your project not mine?

Im not gonna bow down to you, i will release the demo when i am good and ready and i believe it to be stable enough.

I didnt ask for a demo. I understand you wouldnt want to release an unstable demo but considering its been 4 months and you say yourself that you have plenty to show how difficult is it to post a few screenshots?

I wasnt arguing at all just curious as to why there is basically no information about how the game was coming along but it seems I missed all the stuff that was stored on the other forum.

To be honest after reading what he has said about the development of the game I cant understand why he cant answer any question regarding its development. Just seems like he uses the community on here to get suggestions and ideas but gives nothing back but defensive "I dont have to tell you anything" kind of answers.

I am pretty sure all of these will be ignored or Ill get a defensive reply along the lines of "Its none of your business" but lets see.

Dev tools means development tools, like the compiler and stuff. Activx controls, Ocx's and all the neat little things that makes the cool stuff happen in software.

Activx and Ocx's dont work in OpenGL or directX so what use are they exactly?

I've built a very fast memory array!. But as said API's arent really my strong point and i really didnt want to have to store the code for the lines that BOTF I draws when a destination is picked for a fleet, so in BOTF II the fleets will be drag and droppable which some should like.

So the fact that DirectX and OpenGL are API's isnt going to be a problem?
Can you explain what you mean by storing the code? It makes no sense. After reading that you are making the ships drop and drag(can you imagine how long that is going to take with 200 ships?)
Is it because you dont know the algorithum to draw the lines?

Now im unsure if any of you have played star trek armada but if you have you will be familar with the small screen at the bottom right of the control interface. Something similar has been put into the botf II code base. Also known as the Federation News Network when a planet is colonized or a borg fleet arrive, or even a planet is taken captive it is reported as a news event and shown indepth while the game continues. Its a clever use of the windows media sdk and directx and shows the multimedia capabilities of the new game.

So what happens to the News Network when you use OpenGL?

force stop with the 50 questions, unless your a fully fledged programmer and offering to actually help g tufrey the only programmer so far, stop bogging him down with questions and slowing his work down, its not as if hes not got enough to do allready

The Tactical engine will use directx, but that is still under development.

I decided at first that drag and drop ships would be easier but since then it has been changed, i did mention that one of the threads (cant remember which). But you obviously havnt looked hard enough.

All you had to do was leave it at that which although didnt answer any of my questions shows some insight into what is going on.

The tactic of accusing me of attacking you because you cant answer basic questions is becoming really predictable and pointless because you yourself stated that you wasnt an experienced programmer and would as you put it "learn as you went along".

It is pretty obvious that no one cares how much you know about programming its just the end product they care about.

Dont worry I wont ask you anymore questions.

lol trust me if yours involves activ x and ocx's then I dont want to know.

Raiden,
Unfortunately he has made it clear he works alone.

Although if he ever decides to give up on it let me know.

this project will not be shut down, this type of game is no longer plausible as a high profit venture for any games company, turn based strategy are usually not high erners, the current license owners activision are not keen on turn based games as most lose terribel amounts of money, a example was the massive flop for atari which was moo3 and as a result atari will not be releasing moo4. only starting up games companies and games publishers will risk money on turn based games becuase they need to in order to gain a market in a area of games

big publishers and games companies tend to stick to allready high erning games and movies frenchies that tend to draw people in to buy the game.

basicaly strategy games are for thinkers, unfortunately most gamers these days are comprised of pea brained morons who couldnt think themselves out of a wet paper bag, ie they usualy go around saying things like "suxxor" or "you were pwned" or "im uber" or the old favourite "your such a NO0B"

What's a NOOB anyway? I've seen that around.

I'm so glad that brief, yet embarassing bout of immaturity seems to have left the forum.

Necro = Necromancer, a class you can build up, Likes wearing black carries sickles and see's dead people

once it`s released and public domain it won`t matter if it goes out as a freebie on a mag.

I'd not heard any of those! You learn something every day.

I've never played games of any kind online, except BOTF with a mate a couple of years ago.

Actually I played Everquest and games that preceeded it and havent heard about toons either.

All the other slang words predate EQ by far.

The Game Master is the controling person in a role playing game. He acts as a form of storyteller and represents all nonplayer characters. For a singleplayer computer run RPG the computer is the actual GM and in MMORPGs they are basically the company staff.
