A group of scientists has managed to send a message using neutrinos for the first time:
http://www.rochester.edu/news/show.php?id=4022Compared to sound or electromagnetic waves (including light) this has many advantages as neutrinos can travel through almost anything (including whole planets!). Of course, practical applications are a bit far into the future yet, but it looks promising.
For example, a neutrino signal could travel thought a very intense storm without distortions. I remember an episode in TNG where La Forge was trapped in the surface of a planet along with a Romulan and in the end managed to send a signal using neutrons instead of regular E/M waves. Of course a neutron is very different from a neutrino (the former is a hadron the latter a lepton) but the idea is similar
