Hello!

Everytime I try to start a new single player game, I get an error message and the game crashes. The error.txt contains the following lines:

Quote:
Eine externe Komponente hat eine Ausnahme ausgelöst.

bei Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Graphics.GraphicsDevice.DrawPrimitives(PrimitiveType primitiveType, Int32 startVertex, Int32 primitiveCount)
bei Supremacy.Xna.Sun.Render() in w:\Supremacy\Mainline\Supremacy.Xna\Sun.cs:Zeile 206.
bei Supremacy.Xna.SunView3D.Present(XnaTime time) in w:\Supremacy\Mainline\Supremacy.Xna\SunView3D.cs:Zeile 140.
bei Supremacy.Xna.XnaComponent.DoPresent() in w:\Supremacy\Mainline\Supremacy.Xna\XnaComponent.cs:Zeile 568.
bei Supremacy.Xna.XnaComponent.PresentFrame() in w:\Supremacy\Mainline\Supremacy.Xna\XnaComponent.cs:Zeile 535.
bei Supremacy.Xna.XnaComponent.Tick() in w:\Supremacy\Mainline\Supremacy.Xna\XnaComponent.cs:Zeile 503.
bei Supremacy.Xna.XnaComponent.OnTimerTick(Object sender, EventArgs eventArgs) in w:\Supremacy\Mainline\Supremacy.Xna\XnaComponent.cs:Zeile 197.
bei Supremacy.Xna.XnaTimer.OnTick(Object sender, EventArgs e) in w:\Supremacy\Mainline\Supremacy.Xna\XnaTimer.cs:Zeile 60.
bei System.EventHandler.Invoke(Object sender, EventArgs e)
bei System.Windows.Media.MediaContext.RenderMessageHandlerCore(Object resizedCompositionTarget)
bei System.Windows.Media.MediaContext.RenderMessageHandler(Object resizedCompositionTarget)
bei System.Windows.Threading.ExceptionWrapper.InternalRealCall(Delegate callback, Object args, Int32 numArgs)
bei MS.Internal.Threading.ExceptionFilterHelper.TryCatchWhen(Object source, Delegate method, Object args, Int32 numArgs, Delegate catchHandler)

I tried to use the older [20130131b] version instead, but I get the same error message and the game crashes. Microsoft .NET Framework 4 is installed, and I use Windows XP. Could this have something to do with my rather old OS? :hmm:

Again welcome Floppy!

:vulcan: I think XP could be the issue. Let me ask around.
I recall we are now coded for Vista Windows 7

I don't speak German, but I was able to read some of the error log. I still dont know what the issue is though.

XP shouldn't be causing an issue. The game is natively designed for Windows 7, but it runs fine on XP too - we've had a lot of people comment that this is the case, and I have an old XP computer that it runs fine on.

My best guess is that *some* component that Supremacy needs isn't working or isn't installed. Supremacy needs quite a few components installed, not just .Net Those components were posted by Iceman I believe, and I reiterated them in another post a month or three ago. That might've been on Facebook though lol. I'll see if I can find the links for you.

Please check that you have *all* the components listed here:

viewtopic.php?f=13&t=4797

The game runs fine on XP, like Matress said, provided you have the pre-reqs. Check the XNA fw in particular.

I checked, and all these components are installed. Still, the game crashes and the error.txt contains the same error text as mentioned above. :( Here also the content of the last log file, in case this might help:

You've posted the wrong log file - we need Error.txt or ServerError.txt (One or both may be present and are automatically deleted every time you load the game [And remade during a crash], so if the game crashes copy the txt files straight away).

The file you just copied was Log.txt. Note that that is a completely different file and is basically a log of the games' attempt to randomly create a Galaxy map when you start a new game from scratch. It's very rare you would ever need to look at this file. It could potentially allow you to cheat if the F12 reveal map option is ever removed though...

Of course, I understand that - but the error.txt still contains the exactly same text that I have posted in my original post, and I just wanted to post the log.txt for the sake of completeness.

P.S.: "Eine externe Komponente hat eine Ausnahme ausgelöst." means "An external component has thrown an exception.", "bei" means "at", and "Zeile" means "line".

No luck yet?

Sorry to insist on this, but did you make sure that you have the v3.1 XNA FW installed? It's an XNA issue, so this is the most logical source for the problem you're having.

As I said earlier, all the components listed in http://botf2.star-trek-games.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=4797 are installed, including Microsoft XNA Framework Redistributable 3.1. Do you think I should try to install older versions of the game in order to find out which version is the latest playable one for my computer? Maybe this could help troubleshooting. :hmm:

well...I just started 20130203 on my German Win7...no problems.

Log.txt is quite the same as Floppy's ... next lines are
Code:
17:52:38.476 [12] DEBUG General - Serialized 546,893 bytes of data in 00:00:00.3737346
17:52:39.286 [ClientEventLoop] DEBUG General - Deserialized 546,893 of data in 00:00:00.8078653
---- # I pressed Turn 1=finish # ----
17:55:04.736 [4] DEBUG General - Serialized 289 bytes of data in 00:00:00.0013568
17:55:04.745 [24] DEBUG General - Deserialized 289 of data in 00:00:00.0009689
17:55:05.518 [11] DEBUG General - Turn processing time: 00:00:00.7567167
17:55:05.904 [11] DEBUG General - Serialized 71,485 bytes of data in 00:00:00.3782469
17:55:06.421 [ClientEventLoop] DEBUG General - Deserialized 71,485 of data in 00:00:00.4025856
17:55:07.609 [4] DEBUG General - Serialized 466,913 bytes of data in 00:00:02.0819637
17:55:07.657 [4] DEBUG General - Auto-save time: 00:00:02.1358779
17:55:07.675 [4] DEBUG General - Update publish time: 00:00:02.1540721
17:55:07.763 [5] DEBUG General - AI processing time: 00:00:00.0002044
quite normal, I guess..

my Error.txt, Clientlog.txt and Trace.txt are empty.

Maybe Floppy needs an earlier component (NET Framework 3.5 SP1 RTM ?) ... taken from http://www.startreksupremacy.com/download.html

I don't think it's going to help, but you can certainly try. I mean, for the builds after the changes to shipyards (rotating models) - it's pretty much been bug fixes and enhancements.

Could you try the latest data files, just to cross off one possible culprit? Here they are.

I installed and tried out all the old builds - none of them was working.

Downloaded it and tried it out with the newest build, but I got the same result.

However, what I find strange is that not even the May 2009 build is working properly. Unlike all later builds, it can start the game (even though it takes at least 3 minutes to load) and I have the "Round 1" screen, but it reacts incredibly slow to any action, and eventually crashes completely after ~30 seconds. I remember that I was able to play this build perfectly on this very same computer maybe one or two years ago. :confused:

don't know but try deactivating "high image scaling" in OPTIONS

at my PC it takes around 30 sec. to get turn 1 ... a longer time could be normal at your PC (maybe it's some years old)

I deactivated all three opted-in graphic options, but nothing changed.

Different idea: Could it have something to do with the ATI Catalyst driver that I installed a few months ago? I've read on a couple of websites that XNA might cause problems with these Catalyst drivers.

Hoping that this will not be forgotten or ignored, I'll bump this thread. :(
