It looks great iwulff, cant wait to see it when your done.

The only suggestion I have is to make the text for everything a little bigger, espically the race info text for the Acamarians. (I saw that you said you will, but wasnt sure if you have yet).

Incase anyone was wondering, even though I have a Cable modem, usually I'm using the wireless card in my laptop to piggyback off a neighbors wireless modem connection.  This way I dont have to be stuck in my room if i want to check out whats happening over here on this site.

nobody tell my neighbor, dont want to ruin a good thing.

The funny thing is, my mum almost got me a wireless system for the house, but I haven't got a clue what you mean by those security thingies michae1ang1o. I'm glad she didn't buy it if there's no security!

My internet provider is actually a company called plusnet. It's quite a small company, and I had to pay a lot for the modem, but the service is top-notch. I haven't had the internet crash or freeze on me once, unlike some of my friends who are with the big companies.

Plusnet run a few competitions every now and then as well - the last prize was a modern revamped version of the master system!

Their homepage is really easy to navigate as well. My friend usually ends up kicking his computer in whenever he goes on the NTL homepage!

I only went with this company coz a computer magazine did a customer survey, and Plusnet came out as the cheapest service, (BOTH the 512Kb and the 1Mb service are 14.99 a month!) they did the best in customer satisfaction, and had the best rating in the stability of their connections. They are quite a small company in comparison to BT etc. though, and several of the options in the magazine didn't have a rating, because they couldn't find enough people to survey!

Anyway, their homepage is http://www.plus.net if people don't believe me.

...

Iwulff, I've noticed that occaisionally when you click on a new page, the old page stays onscreen, even once the new page is displayed. it can make things a bit difficult to read, but it looks cool when you can see all the info about the Acamarians, while a Tholian stares at you from the background...

I don't know whether it is a random glitch, or just my computer not properly supporting the file type - since no-one else seems to have mentioned this. It usually stops if I click on the homepage and then click back to what I was reading though.

Prehaps i should add a scrollbar at the discription place, if some discriptions are to long? Nay, doesn't look very StarTrek. Perhaps some sort of auto scroll function or something, that everytime you move over it, it will scroll down. And when you go of it, it will scroll back to the original place. Sounds a bit nasty... But i think i know a quick way to do it. I will at least try it.

Something else should i also make the codes on the LCARS a bit larger? I mean these once 6823-02? I know about the buttons and i will change it, so that it will be more readable.

I am at the moment thinking about how to make the map and technology interfaces... Will have to try things out.

Yes i have noticed it to, and it shouldn't happen. Perhaps its random glitch, because from programming view in flash this shouldn't happen. I have placed on all the buttons unload movies commands and stuff like that. But i have seen it when the page isn't fully loaded yet, the first time you go on it.

I was just trying to make this happen again, but it ain't working... :? Bit weird...

I have added the socalled quadrant races into the flash database and i found the problem. The problem is that 1asphost.com, is really slow and a torment for this. When you load a page and think you are ready, asphost still is loading something, then when you press a button like the Romulans then it will be possible that it will restart the stuff, i haven't got any problems like these on my computer, so it has to do with the slow connection. Perhaps i can put it somewhere on the botf2 site and make a link from there...

Jesus. I've completely ignored this thread since it was started. I'd never heard the term flash before and just figured it was some nerdy term.

This screen is awesome beyond belief. Excellent work wulffman, let me know if you need anything.

iwulff, nice updates :D

a few glicthes:
 I noticed when you click Sphere Builders you get the Klingons.
 When I press a quadrant race button the screen starts blinking and I see the opening animation in the background (the race info, stays, but the background is the opening anim.)
Just to inform you in case you didn't know.

i think i understand a problem with the loading. There isn't a error but behind the scene the home page is loaded. That is why i have to unload it first. I will update it as quickly as possible. I will also make the opening screen a bit faster. About the Klingons when you click sphere builders, this is quite normal.

I will try to continue with this in a few hours when i have some time left. Also gotta see a new StarGate episode. I also know that the screens of some species might not have that high res look. So if any of you have a link to a big highres picture for those races, don't hesitate just place the link.

This is the exact same picture from which you got your romulan picture, except it has a better resolution (I'm pretty sure it does).

and a pretty big one (558 x 603)

I've just checked it out, and it didn't glitch once this time. Looks like you've solved the problem. :D

I assume that you put the Klingons in under the Sphere builders, to check that it works, like with the Tholians? (Coz the Klingons are still Sphere builders)

there still is a problem. The main reason i can find is that asphost just can't handle this. I will check for some other solution.

Oh yeah, it does glitch if you click on things without giving them enough time to load properly, but if you wait a few seconds it doesn't glitch (As much)

Remember though, I seem to have a faster internet connection than most people, so you guys will probably have to wait longer. I bet michae1ange1o hasn't even noticed the problem with his fancy 4Mb connection!

It does seem that the website is just slow loading, and this is what is causing the problems. Perhaps if there was a way of decreasing the size of the file(s), it would work better?

It might even just be the fact that it is such a hi-res file. Is there any way of decreasing it? I don't mind too much about the current size, coz I can read the text if I expand the screen - it's just my monitor works best at a resolution of 800x600.

Some people might have even lower res screens though, it just depends on who looks at it. Will it be this hi-res in the game? I'm just thinking of the little people, that's all.

the total file size of the database at this moment is only 263kb. That is something i wouldn't call large. I have checked in the files and just can't find any errors, or things that should be added. Besides i also have added a loader and the things doesn't seem to work fully. Perhaps that's the problem somehow...

Oh...right, I wouldn't call it big either. I assumed that it was a bigger file than that, just coz your database is so good. I imagined it to be somewhere in the region of a couple of Mb. 263Kb is nothing.

I'll have a look for any sites that offer help with flash files. I don't know if i'll be able to find anything, but I might.

har har :P sence oi got moi thas fandangled entire net oi been happy as a peg in shet, great work on this flash iwulff :D cant wait to see it in motion with sound, i get a flicker when selecting new catagories, just a minor server lag is all, oim now gonna go ploy moi arf loif tew ... oh! yeah your network card needs a mac address to log onto some broadband services they kinda look like si09r8f98i45uh4 that, every network card has a unique mac adress that acts like its fingerprint, you can set up a wireless router to accept only that mac address and none other or multiple unique addresses and or ip numbers eg 192.43.57.194, an ip CAN be spoofed, but a mac address can only be cloned and its a VERY expensive procedure that involves santa clause 3 elves a bottle of anal lube and michael jackson

The .swf filetype is intriguing me now. I downloaded a program called Sculptoris voices lite - it lets you create a talking character, and it makes the character look like it is actually speaking! (I wanted to frighten my previously mentioned friends with a talking goldfish!)

I can't get it to work though, since until whenever-this-thread-started I had never heard of the .swf file type. Iwulff what programs do you use to open it with? I can't see my talking goldfish without know what programs run it!

I've checked the help file, and it just says to load it into powerpoint or a html editor.

Well that helps! I don't know what it means by load it into powerpoint!

I can't open it with powerpoint, and dragging/copying and pasting it in just just gives me the file icon, and nothing else. I downloaded a html editor for it as well to try that, but that doesn't even recognise the file type!

My windows help files don't recognise the file type either. :( Can anyone help me?

...

Michae1ange1o, i'll pretend I didn't read the last line of your post. It sort of makes me feel...<retching> (Now why isn't there a emoticon for puking?)

A webbrowser can usually VIEW .swf...they are plash animations.

But to make them...you need the Flash making program.... I have Macromedia Flash MX 2004. OpenOffice is also rumored to be able to handle these files. And it's free. :)

Well the actual files are stored in the .fla file type. These swf's are just something like published files of those, into smaller packages. There are programs which can create a fla out of a .swf so that you can use it for macromedia Flash MX or something. But that is something that most people don't appreciate when this happens to their site/product. Because you just copied their work.

Perhaps SWITCH can do it? It's a sort of a flash program only it's a bit less complicated. I don't know if it recognizes these filetypes but you could try. But why do you want do this? I mean do you want to check the file or something?

A question to you, do you want this flash database to come with the game? To be put up as a website or both? With flash you can easily create an exe file. So it wouldn't be much of a problem to release it for the game.

No, I want to open the file! 8O

You select the .wav file that you want, (The recording of what you want the file to say) and you can select an optional text file as well. (A written version of the sound file) You then select a character 'face' that will do the talking.

The program then scans the sound file and syncs the character so it looks like it is actually doing the talking. It uses the text file to increase the accuaracy of the character.

Once the file is made, I end up with a .swf file, but the icon is the plain white one with the windows logo on it (The one that you get when windows doesn't know what program to open it with, or has glitched) When I click on it, I get the 'open file with...' box.

I just want to know how I can open the file, so that I can see it and send it to my friends!

I have windows 98 second edition, and I do have the Macromedia Flash player (Although I can't find the program files for it, but I installed a newer version yesterday, and when I go back on the website, it only tells me that I have the latest version of flash, instead of the option to redownload it)

I had a look at the Flash MX download, but it is 99.6Mb - i'll wait til next month, to download it, or my download limit will go over.

It doesn't matter if you can't help me, it was just for a bit of fun.

...

I received an email saying that my email to you was returned, because your inbox was full. I'll send the files individually. Let me know as you get them, and then I'll send the next one. I'll zip them individually for you as well.

I have got a few computer beeps and things, but most of the sounds are the computer voice. Some of them are bigger than you want as well (I've got one that is at 299kb) but most are less than 100kb.

I've got 17 files for you, four of which are computer 'beeps'. These four files add up to 339kb, if you want to know. Look for an email from 'grimmedbythereapernew@yahoo.co.uk'.

If you are having problems with your inbox, i'd recommend signing up for a yahoo account. The inboxes alone have 250mb of space, and the spam guard works really well. (Although it isn't perfect)

Your current email is iwulff@hotmail.com, isn't it?I just want to make sure that the files don't get sent to someone else!

You might as well put a poll up to see what people want, but I definitely think the database should be part of the release version of the game. A proper help file was something that I thought BOTF lacked. The files would definitely be useful to anyone that was new to the game, or likes to read up about the different races. It might even grab people's attention for the game...

I've sent three of the sounds to you. the total file space is just over 100kb, because the third sound is 77kb.

Let me know when you get them, and i'll send the rest.
