well, iwulff started a list a few pages back on this thread, but i dont think it was ever finished. oh well

Good job CVN, but as you said, most have been chewed up and spit out by now. :lol: But theres always room for more. :D

Woah, I bet you're glad I didn't have a go at making that list...:lol:

I had absolutely no idea that we had gone so mad on the randoms! ('Excellent' in Mr. Burns' from the Simpsons' voice) :D

I've got some thoughts/questions about these randoms, though: -

What is number 14 about? The John Prescott one?

Number 24 - The changeling one - The Dominion are going to be, but i think the changelings should still be in.

Number 30 - The discovery of Data could also give you a computer tech bonus

Number 37 - The defection of a spy - the opposite could happen, as in one of your spies defect to another empire, or another empire could create a 'fake' defector, and feed you the wrong info, so you get reduced espionage/sabotage, or the enemy empire gains an advantage to their espionage/sabotage efforts for x turns until you realise what is happening.

I think we need to come up with some more 'good' randoms though, since there is still a bit of a leaning towards 'bad' randoms. (And anyway, the more randoms the better) :D:twisted:

Well here are some technology randoms: -

The discovery of a new deposit of Dilithium/Resources in a system. Gives a production bonus for x turns.

A piece of equipment malfunctions, causing strange sensor readings. Research into the readings' discovers a new direction for computer/energy research. receive a bonus to computer/energy research for x turns.

A strange mutation during a genetic experiment creates a new source of study for your Bio researchers. Bio research bonus.

The discovery of a vein of a rare metal allows your Construction researchers to build a new structure. Construction research bonus.

A student writes a paper on a new form of propulsion. Your amazed researchers discover the student's experiments are correct. Propulsion research bonus.

A small explosion in a lab causes a chain reaction, that creates a new form of energy. The energy has a direct apllication in the energy and weapons fields of research. Energy/Weapons research bonus.

Good job OmniQ on making that list. It needed to be done. We certainly have alot, dont we?

Matress, while those ideas you just suggested sounded good (and I think they should definately be considered for addition to the game), i think now we should concentrate on the list we already have. Seeing which ones on that list should stay, and for the ones that do stay, lets finalize them.

Of course, if anyone has any ideas for other randoms, feel free to post, I just think its time to refine what we already have. :)

EDIT, this thread is getting a little long, and clogged, I'm going to go and open a new thread that is all about discussing/finalizing the randoms on OmniQ's list. This thread is still fine for talking about randoms, but lets use the other thread to finalize the ones on the list. :)

How about the Omega particle? An AI race might decide to create Omega, but like it does in these stories, it blows up, rendering the system unavigable via warp. If you don't destroy Omega in X turns, it self destructs and makes warp travel impossible for a large area of the map.

Will there be a difficulty slider for random events? the thing I hated about BOTF was the random events would slowly widdle your empire apart the longer you played becuase they were all so negative. We should labled each of the events good, bad, & neutral

then make 5 settings numbers are in %

a all good things 40 good 60 neutral 0 bad
b trouble with tribbles 30 good 55 neutral 15bad
c balance or terror 33 good 33 neutral 33 bad
d moon of praxis 15 good 55 neutral 30 bad
e nexus rift 0 good 60 neutral 40 bad


so the program would roll for the events good, bad, & neutral
then roll for the event itself based on a ranking system: a super nova sould be more of a rare chance than a terror bombing of a factory

what do you think??

I agree with you. Since we have most bad events, there should be some difficulty slider as you said.

We are in the process of finalising the randoms at the moment. the last meeting was a bit disastrous (As in we basically did nothing...) :oops:

Send your MSN sign-in to Iwulff, and he'll add you to the discussion on the weekend. You can mention it then. We haven't arranged a time yet, but we are definitely going to have another go. We've sent each other copies of our ideas at least.

If you want, have a go at re-writing the randoms in OmniQ's list. Write them as they would appear on-screen. The more ideas we have, the finalised we will be able to make the random events.

I really like the idea of the slider, but the implementation will be down to the programmer (Gavin) it doesn't sound like it would take too much to program tho. If you can't get on to MSN on the weekend, let one of us know, and we'll mention it for you (We as in Me, CVN, Rigel, Iwulff, SOM, Gavin, Dafedz, and anyone else that will be on there)

It's definitley woth discussing tho. :wink: :D

It would certainly make life easier (And more customisable) in BOTF2. It also souns like it might be OK to program, but we'll have to ask gavin or iwulff about that.

a thought.. not exactly a random event.. but heres an idea..
you know in civilization 3, you have things like king richards crusade or darwins voyage and etc...... i think this would be great for botf (but should be OPTIONAL).. like.. for example:

"alliance with romulans" (defiant that can cloak)
"alliance with 8472" (anti-borg tech)
"bajorans join fed" (you get ds9)
"voyager returns home" (wicked technology like armor plate shielding and etc)
"augmented klingons" (troop transports are 2x or 4x as effective) or intel is stronger???
"wolf 359" (i dunno.. something)
"kahless(the clone) returns" (all klingons worlds are fanatic)
"new grand negus" or "new rule of aquissition"(100% profit for all ferrengi worlds)
"cylon detector" wrong forum :)

well you get the jist.... anyways.. dont hate me for thinking i got plenty of other ideas...

I understand what you mean, and this is basicaly the same principle as the randoms...

But; Defiants cloaking will not be happening. Generay, there is a dislike for trading technologies to just one or more ships.

SP 8472 will be a non-negotiable semi-agressive race. No alliances, no trade, ect

If you want the Bajorans to join you will have to have good diplomatic relations with them and help them out if they're in a jam. Simple as that.

If you want a Voyager-type situation, you can have it. Just run into some anomaly, that catapults the ship accross a distance, and then navigate the ship home. Along the was the ship can study annomailies, meet new races, while watching out not to run out of fuel.

You could make somethnig with the Klingon troops and Kahless, as well as the Ferengi Nagus/RulesOA. Make a description and post it so it can be included into the Randoms list :wink:

Well i've already given you your welcome as well... :wink: :lol:

I know EXACTLY what you mean by the wonders - I have Civ 2 and 3. Essentially, there are wonders in the game - as in the fact that each of the minor races have their own special structure, that can only be built in their homesystem, once you have gained control of them (Diplomatically)

I know it Civ, the wonders could be built by any race, as long as they have the required tech, but there is nothing really like this other than the buildings and ships.

Each race-specific structure has special bonuses - just like the wonders, so there is no need for there to be wonders in BOTF2. You also have to remember that each of the races have their own special structures as well, like Utopia Planitia for the Federation. (Actually, so far the Federation are going to have a lot more structures than the other major races, but this is only because the list hasn't been fianlised, and we know more about the Federation than the other empires, anyway) :wink:

CVN is right though. There will be no 'special' ships. The Defiant will not have a cloaking device, and the Prometheus will not have multi-vector assault mode (As far as I know, it might not even be in as a ship)

The reason for the non-cloaking Defiant, is that to do it, you would need quite a bit more programming, for a relatively small addition - it's essentially pointless!

Of course, when the game is released, you'll just be able to set it so ALL the Defiants can cloak, should you want to. (Just like you could with BOTF) This game will be totally moddable, so you'll be able to make it what you want. :wink:

and yeah... the modding idea is perfect... i just think.. that the game should be just a wee little story accurate..but its no biggy

I've posted the reason up before (I think)

I know i've told the guys over MSN the reasons for the matress. Basically, this one time I was just really annoying to my friends, and <For reasons that are still unknown> they called me a Mistress of evil.

Of course, being a guy and all, there was no way that I was going to go round with Mistress as a nickname, so I shouted back the first thing that came into my head at the time: -

'I'M NOT A MISTRESS, I'M A MATRESS OF EVIL!!!' :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

(We were sitting on my bed at the time)

It's been my nickname ever since. Of course, my friend (Who happened to be a girl) became the Mistress of evil a little later on. :lol:


You may have noticed that my posts tend to be a little on the long side...well let that be a warning, because as far as I can tell, I hold the record - unintentionally of course... :wink: :lol:
